Free Music Review: Swilling 18th Century Champagne to Bow Wow Wow!
Hit: 5 Stars

When I first heard that Director, Sofia Coppola was coming out with a brand new film titled, "Marie Antoinette", I was brimming with excitement. Her last movie, "Lost in Translation" is one of my favorite films. One of the components, that made that movie so good was a brilliant soundtrack, that mixed music genres such as Rock, Pop, Electronica and Chill-Out. The soundtrack reflected both the inner emotional lives of the characters and the film's beautiful, dreamy visuals.

So, could Coppola work her cinematic magic again? Would it bring about the release of another great soundtrack? The resounding answer to those questions is yes! For those, who don't know, this film gives us a thoughtful and emotional look at the life of Marie Antoinette, the infamous "Let them eat cake", 18th century Queen of France. It shows her metamorphisizing from a shy teenager to an extravagent young woman, who loved both high fashion and partying. She was the original, 'A-List' celebrity of her day. But by the time she finally reached some maturity in her life, angry mobs of peasants were at the palace gates.

Once again Sofia Coppola proves she can beautifully use music to reflect the emotional core of both her characters and the film itself. Before the movie came out some critics were tut-tutting, the ideal of using modern music for a film set in the 18th century. But it really does work! This particular soundtrack is two discs emphasizing, two very distinct moods. Disc one mainly features Pop & Rock that came out of'80s mixed with some newer music. It includes such bands as Gang of Four, Bow Wow Wow, New Order, Aam & the Ants, The Cure. To be honest, I havn't really listen to these bands that that much in the past. But I like what I hear! This music is very high in energy. When I hear this music I can just picture the expensive champagne being poured and the laughter of the film's characters as they partied their way through long debauched evenings. The music on this part of soundtrack to me seems to reflect/represent the extravagance and glamour of the lifestyle within the French court.

The second disc is much more subdued and uses a mix of both classical, electonica and chill-out to create a sonic landscape that reflects the more meditative or emotional side of the film's main character and the world she lived in. I really like the way these two discs are devided up to create a mood. All in all, this is a wonderful movie soundtrack, that both complements and positively adds to the film. It is also a great stand alone mix of songs. Can't wait for the next one! Highly recommended!

Marie Antoinette Poster

A TWO DISC SOUNDTRACK WITH MUSIC FOR THE PARTY . . . AND FOR THE MORNING AFTER.

Featuring APHEX TWIN BOW WOW WOW THE CURE GANG OF FOUR NEW ORDER THE STROKES and more!

Oscar-winning Sofia Coppola brings to the screen an imaginative interpretation of the life of France's legendary teenage queen Marie Antoinette. When betrothed to King Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman), the naïve Marie Antoinette (Kirsten Dunst) enters the opulent French court which is steeped in conspiracy and scandal. Without guidance, adrift in a dangerous world, the young girl rebels against the isolated atmosphere at Versailles and becomes France's most misunderstood monarch. Based on the book Marie Antoinette: The Journey by Antonia Fraser.

Marie Antoinette may be a period film, but don't expect minuets: Sofia Coppola's candy-colored portrait of the doomed queen moves to a punk beat. Whatever you think of how that approach works in the movie itself, it makes for a bracing two-CD soundtrack that's like a mix tape put together by a DJ particularly attuned to the tastes of 2006, not 1786. A dominant chunk of the selection is made up of vintage postpunk tracks, from Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Hong Kong Garden" to Gang of Four's "Natural's Not in It," from New Order's "Ceremony" to the Cure's "All Cats Are Grey." The giddily fun Bow Wow Wow offers a counterpoint to all that seriousness with three songs (two of them, including the iconic "I Want Candy," remixed by My Bloody Valentine's maestro Kevin Shields). Newer contributions come from acts as diverse as retromongers the Strokes and avant-electronicists Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, while Dustin O'Halloran (half of the L.A. duo Devics) contributes three nice, Debussy-style piano solos. The most conventional choices of the lot are a pair of harpsichord pieces by Couperin and Scarlatti, as well as Vivaldi's "Concerto in G," a chestnut that's got to be in every single film set in the 18th century. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
