Free Music Notes for Marie AntoinetteFree Music Review: Sofia Coppola - Director or DJ? Hit: 5 Stars
I think it's fair to say that Miss Coppola has superb taste in music.
I first heard this album over Christmas weekend when a friend brought her laptop over. She plugged it into my receiver and let it run through. Meanwhile we were baking and cooking. I found myself really getting into the music, and was even surprised by her taste. Song after song came on, and I even wrote down the names of a few bands I'd never heard of, in hopes of doing further research for prospective purchases or downloads. I was even enjoying the harpsichord interludes which were tastefully woven into the mix.
I asked for a copy of the 2 disc soundtrack and have been listening to it all weekend. It's just one of those kinds of albums with a great mix of songs and sounds that really just take you to another place. I'm not sure they take me to Marie Antoinette's time, heh, but it's great escape music regardless.
This soundtrack will speak to anyone who enjoys 80s dance punk, or low fi indie rock, ala my bloody valentine, yo la tengo, etc.

I can not wait to see this film. Looking at the trailers I was more than curious why songs from New Order and The Cure are being used to promote a period piece. It sparked my interest since the images and the music seem to work so well in a 30 second preview on the small screen. My question has been answered, it happens that, that is the score for the film. The soundtrack is great for a rainy day or even a sunny day outside it evokes all kinds of emotion. I was plesantly surprised and understand why this music was incorporated in the film. Marie Antoniette was a teenage queen, rebellious and high spirited torn between love and monarch and in no way different than a regular teenage girl today. The music in this soundtrack can so well have been her music of that day like her story as real today ,making it enjoyable for todays eyes and ears. Note the second disc includes a dash of the classical, just sit back kick off your shoes drink some wine and snuggle.

Its funny: I'm the same age as Sophia Coppola and I seemed to have missed out on some great 80s music. I have never listened to Siouxsie and the Banshees and Bow Wow Wow. Strange how the music in this is so hypnotic---is it the choice of the music itself? or it's visceral association with the film? The girl who wrote here that it sounds like its coming from down the hall is spot on.
Combining the lavish past of the film and contrasting it with contemporary pop music is a master stroke (reminds me a bit of how Sally Potter seamlessly combined past and present in the movie, Orlando). The second disc is such a wonderful addition---again, the seemingly incongorous match between the first and second disc comes off as brilliant. I found myself imagining the movie so vividly when listening to these tracks.
Free Music Review: what a great soundtrack! Hit: 5 Stars
sofia coppola has put together an amazing soundtrack for her new movie. i saw the movie in the netherlands this past summer and it is one of my all time favorites! the soundtrack creates a youthful, haunting combination of 80s hits and classical/atmospheric pieces. i created a mix from the two double discs that i could play at parties, leaving out some of the slower songs...but thats not to say these songs arent wonderful. some of them are just those ones that pull at your heart, especially after seeing the movie, because most of the songs are so well placed in it. who would of thought that Hong Kong Garden by Siouxsie and the Banshees would fit in so well at an 18th century aristocrats ball? i guess sophia coppola. see the movie, buy the album...they are both an absolute wonder to the senses.

Sophia Coppola does it again. Another amazing movie and a soundtrack to match. Valley girl sounds, mixed with alternative rock and orchesta melodies. The first disc is sassy with a majority of the danceable tunes, and disc two is what I listen to when I need to slow down and reflect. Similar to Coppola's first movie the Virgin Suicides, the soundtrack has songs that hit every mood. I can't believe I never heard of Air or Aplex Twins before these movies. It doesn't matter who is in the car, if I put on the Marie Antoinette soundtrack, everyone is bopping their heads and playing air drums to the beats, even my 57yr old mother. Hope she doesn't read this!
