Free Music Review: Weaker Than Expected

Before sitting down to write this review, I read most of the reviews and also listened to Somewhere Else at least a dozen times in different settings to see if there was anything useful I could add to the discussion. Some reviews are so vitriolic and others so adoring that I had to laugh. Come on, folks!
Well, after all the listening my verdict is that it is not nearly as great as some say but also is not half as lousy as the many negative reviews say it is. Perhaps I think that way because I am not a strong partisan of either the Fish or the Hogarth eras, I like elements of both.
While weaker than expected after the strong effort on Marbles, Marillion has still given us a few memorable songs. And sometimes the strength of a song here lies in the lyrics rather than in the music itself. To me, the best songs are the strident Most Toys and the kvetching, sarcastic The Last Century of Man which, while they express typically leftist complaints, give the listener a lot to ponder. But then the thought crosses my mind that if humanity was still living in that fabled idyllic pre-industrial age of the idealized days of yore that we would have no recorded music to enjoy.
Those who decide buy this get fifty plus minutes of music and a useful booklet containing lyrics, pictures, and other information pertinent to the album. And since the reviews are roughly divided between the positive and the negative, I urge you to try to hear Somewhere Else first then decide for yourself whether or not it has merit.
