Free Music Review: Marilyn Manson: HOLY WOOD (IN THE SHADOW OF THE VALLEY OF DEATH) (2000)
Hit: 5 Stars

In 2000, Marilyn Manson released his seventh album entitled, HOLY WOOD (IN THE SHADOW OF THE VALLEY OF DEATH). This album, just like his previous albums, is unbelievable. Marilyn Manson does not get older, he just simply gets better. This album is jam packed with killer tunes, and great music videos.

GODEATGOD
A great way to start off your new album. This is an incredible track.

THE LOVE SONG
The third single from the album. Great song.

THE FIGHT SONG
The second single from the album. Another amazing song, with a killer music video, with Manson wearing a cops-like cap, black paint across his eyes and neck, white suspenders, and black slacks. Great song and video.

DISPOSABLE TEENS
The first single from the album. The lead-off single, and it was the perfect choice to pick this track as the lead-off single for your new album. This track, I think I remember Marilyn Manson saying, was inspired by the Colombine shootings. It basically explains how teenagers these days are, in Manson's words, "Disposable Teens". They go out and committ hideous crimes, like the Colombine Shootings, and the parents of these crime-filled teens blame Marilyn Manson for everything. But this is a great song, with creepy, creepy, creepy video. If you listen to the lyrics in the chorus very closely, Marilyn Manson uses a line taken from The Beatles' "Revolution". The line that Marilyn uses is, "You say you wanna revolution".

TARGET AUDIENCE (NARCISSUS NARCOSIS)
A great track that starts off with a slow, and eerie feel, and then goes into a complete rocker. This is an awesome tune, where it even talks a little about the Kennedy assassination.

"PRESIDENT DEAD"
Pretty much talks about John F. Kennedy's assassination. Great song.

IN THE SHADOW OF THE VALLEY OF DEATH
A great track, that is slow and creepy at first, but around 2 minutes into the song, the rockin' sound comes in. Great song.

CRUCI-FICTION IN SPACE
This is a great song. When I first heard it, I flipped over it, and began playing it over and over again.

A PLACE IN THE DIRT
Not bad.

THE NOBODIES
The fourth and final single from the album. This is another great song. Seems as though that Marilyn has a tendency to release certain songs as singles that are incredible.

THE DEATH SONG
Great song.

LAMB OF GOD
Not bad.

BORN AGAIN
Great track.

BURNING FLAG
Awesome.

COMA BLACK: EDEN EYE/APPLE OF THE DISCORD
I'm pretty sure that this track is a follow-up to "Coma White", which was featured on Marilyn's 1998 album, MECHANICAL ANIMALS. This is great track.

VALENTINE'S DAY
From the original 2002 motion picture & motion picture soundtrack VALENTINE (2002). This song is awesome, and it was a great idea to put this song in the 2002 film, VALENTINE, starring Katherine Heigl (as Shelly), Jessica Cauffield (as Lily), Denise Richards (as Paige), Marley Shelton (as Kate), and Jessica Capshaw (as Dorothy).

THE FALL OF ADAM
Great track. I seriously wish this song was released as a single.

KING KILL 33
Awesome tune.

COUNT TO SIX AND DIE (THE VACCUUM OF INFINITE SPACE ENCOMPASSING)
This is a great way to end your new album. This song is really amazing. Love this one.

I was seriously impressed with how amazing this album turned out to be. I already knew the album was going to be great, after hearing "Dispoable Teens" when it was released as the lead-off single, but I had no idea the album would be this great. This is a great buy for all Marilyn Manson fans.

Free Music Review: Chapter 3
Hit: 5 Stars

"it's a story..." Yes, most people know that Holy Wood is amazing by itself. What most people don't know is that the whole series of three albums starting with Antichrist Superstar is a story. I won't put this in quotes cause i don't know if these are manson's exact words, but he said something along these lines (i'll only put the parts i clearly remember in quotes):

Antichrist Superstar is the first part of the story, it's about a boy who is disgusted with society and mainstream. Mechanical Animals is the boy's rebellion as he becomes a man, he tried to rebel against society but in the end it ended up being sell-out and became part of the mainstream he hated. "I made fun of myself with that album, it wasn't to be taken too seriously." Holy Wood is the story of the man who is now so utterly disgusted with what he's become by trying to rebel and turning into one of the sellouts he hates, that he resorts to suicide.

That's the basic story in a nutshell... and everything goes along with it... even the album covers. Look at the cover for antichrist... it's obviously something of torture and animosity. The character feels tortured by society and wants to break away from it and do his own thing. The cover of mechanical.. It's just plain and simple, the character, as he rebels, suddenly becomes popular for it. ("famous for not wanting to be famous") he is stripped naked, and so deprived of his identity by the media etc. that he/she becomes an it, with no clear sexual definition. The cover of Holy Wood... it's the character crucified. He's stripped bare on the cross, but this time it's because he's dying, society has nailed his hands and feet to the wood and now he becomes a martyr.

Personally...i think this story sounds rather suspiciously like Kurt Cobain...

But any way you look at it i think it's pure genius on manson's part, to create a trilogy of albums that not only tell stories by themselves, but can be put together to create one master story. When in the character of Marylin Manson, he's playing out a story, and has been for a while.. through music, image, and pyschology. The people who love him are part of the story, the people who hate him are part of the story. The ones who ignore him or don't know about him are the only ones who escape being involuntarily part of this master role-playing story.

The music is not only excellent, but it follows this pattern... MTV was manson's tool for mechanical animals. all the fans who abandoned him because they thought he sold out did exactly what they were supposed to do.. those who stuck with him did too.. and those who became new fans purely because they saw it on mtv are part of it too. Whether it was actually manson or reznor (who very much made manson what he is today) who came up with this plot i don't know.. probably it grew out of the music and the working together and the concerts and the image... i don't know if he originally had this whole plan in mind or just came up with it as the stuff took off.. but whatever it is it's amazing.

Yes and as for the music... the music is amazing, as i believe i said. It's diverse, moves along in a good pattern, and has got some great headbanging riffs. He's amazing with vocals, and it's the vocals i think that first drew me to the music, the uniqueness of it is unparalleled. Rock on... and keep the stories rolling...

Yeah.. the ability to create albums that stand alone as masterpeices of music and art that at the same time are incorporated in an overall plan is really something... at least i'm very impressed with it. Any way you look at manson's stuff it's genius.. from the overall planning to the flow of the songs right down to the riffs and drums and way the vocals are laid on.

Amazing

Free Music Review: My Favorite Album of All Time!
Hit: 5 Stars

I absolutely love this album, I just sit and listen to it on my headphones and it is quite an experience. The lyrics are beautifully written, ever song has a great unique sound, and the whole album is trying to say something important about the world we live in today. That is all I could ever want in an album. Here's a song-by-song review:
GodEatGod: Very creepy song that has a very creative sound and a great way to start out the album.
The Love Song: An anthem that you can't resist but scream with Manson too. It's very electrifying.
The Fight Song: One of my favorite songs of all time and the second Manson song I ever heard which made me want to start getting into him. The chorus says it all and it's just a wonderful angry song to sing.
Disposable Teens: I really do like this song even though it got overplayed off of this album, but if you still haven't heard it yet, you're in for a treat.
Target Audience: I heard this song before I bought the album and it encouraged me to buy it. I loved every single word written in this song and think it's just brilliant.
"President Dead": Didn't like this at first, but after a while it gets really catchy and it rocks really hard in your ear. Good stuff.
In the Shadow of the Valley of Death: Quite possibly the most depressing sounding song in the world, which is a great change from the beginning of the album. I love to listen to this when i feel really depressed, it just fits my mood very well.
Cruci-Fiction in Space: This would be such a cool song and on my top 10 list if it weren't for the fact that the chorus gets repeated too many times that i just can't stand it sometimes. Still good though.
A Place in the Dirt: This is one of those songs that I just love and never skip just because I love the instumental sounds it has in it, it's very soothing.
The Nobodies: One of my favorite songs before it even hit the radio (and i hate that they're overplaying it lately cuz it's great song i do NOT want to get sick of) Great lyrics regarding to Columbine and very honest.
The Death Song: This is one of those songs that just rocks! Great sound, awesome lyrics, and just a great song that is highly underrated.
Lamb of God: Beautiful song comparing the death of John Lennon to Jesus Christ switching around words in Lennon's song Across the Universe. I love it!
Born Again: Another one of those songs that just rocks. This one and Burning Flag go together well cuz it's really hard and a lot of yelling is involved. But that's still good.
Burning Flag: Pretty much the same as "Born Again"
Coma Black: Another song that I just find to be beautiful. The only thing that bugs me about it is I really do like the chorus, but it is repeated waaaaay too many times, but i still very much enjoy this song.
Valentine's Day: A great creepy song that is very fun to sing. (even if you repeat "In the Shadow of the Valley of Death" like 50 times.)
The Fall of Adam: In my opinion, the weakest song on the album, I don't really understand it, but still has a soothing sound to it I like.
King Kill 33: Spectacular lyrics put to a mediocre sound, but I put up with the weird sounds in it to just say the wonderful words that I can so relate to.
Count to Six and Die: Great song to end the album that kind of has the same haunting type effect that the first song did. Very spooky, yet satisfying.
So now you know about all of these songs, you gotta go out and buy the best CD god (Marilyn Manson) has ever created. Thank you and goodnight.

Free Music Review: My favourite Manson record
Hit: 5 Stars

Nearly every review of marilyn Manson records on this site consists of people explaining who manson is. most people already have a set opinion on him (more often than not its either extreme love or dire loathing. there seems to be little middle ground in reviews relating to him. but that really is beside the point...since i'm supposed to talk about holy wood. it is, in my personal opinion, the best of this bands collection (so far). it is the most darkly depressing and the 2nd most moving (mechanical animals definately tops it there). the record really lives up to its label as gothic rock. the hard rock songs (such as the head banging wonder "the fight song") to the drowning beauty of the more melodic ones ("in the shadow of the valley of death" and "lamb of god"). this album has everything you could want from such a reknown and brilliant artists. here's the details on the tracks:

1. "Godeatgod" : 7/10 interesting intro, slow and sad

2. "the love song": 8/10 plain and simply a good hard rock song

3. "the fight song": 11/10 one of my favourites on the album, great lyrics and message and music, everything about this song kicks major a$$

4. "disposable teens": 7/10 this song is ok, doesn't stand out to much

5. "target audience": 10/10 another favourite, loud and hard

6. "president dead" : 7/10 like "teens" it kinda seems bland

7. "in the valley of the shadow of death": 10/10 a very sad song, i like it a lot cause when i was a kid and i first heard this CD the song felt like my life...so maybe other teens can relate

8. "cruc-ifiction in space" : 7/10 a good song, but sometimes i skip it cause it can get old and repetitive

9. "place in the dirt": 12/10 i love this song! it's too short though. but hard and sad and just f***ing awesome~!

10. "the nobodies" : 10/10 this is another slow song that can easily speak to miserable kids (thus i loved and still love it)

11. "the death song": 9/10 good but for some reason i feel it was ill titled...musically its sort of upbeat (which for manson isn't much..but still).

12. "lamb of god" : 8/10 real downer song, reminds me of mechanical animals

13. "born again": 8/10 pretty hard and thrashy but good lyrics (actually that covers all of this record)

14. "burning flag" : 6/10 though i like it's message this song sounds a bit unintellegent in comparison to other tracks

15. "coma black": 7/10 sounds a lot like 'coma white' and other mechanical animals era songs...which i didn't care for too much

16. "valentine's day": 10/10 i really like this one. it's hard and dark , perfect combo!

17. "the fall of adam": 10/10, this song is real cool. the first part is slow and melow then suddenly it breaks into this heavy, black tone and sounds a lot like a Nazi rally. very differnt and eery.

18. "king kill 33" : 10/10 heavy and dark, this song is part of the reason i liked twiggy ramirez so much (his writing was awesome...too bad he's not in marilyn manson any more)

19."count to 6 and die": 6/10 okay, but slow and a weak ending..maybe it's meant to be

in conlclusion this is a most have for any manson fan and i would suggest it to anyone else as well. goth rock at it best!

Free Music Review: Holy Wood...
Hit: 5 Stars

Manson himself cited that:

"The album's title refers not just to the Hollywood sign, but also to the tree of knowledge that Adam took the first fruit from when he fell out of paradise, the wood that Christ was crucified on, the wood that Oswald's rifle is made from and the wood that so many coffins are made of." and:

"Holy Wood is very much about both evolution and revolution. So there's elements of it that are very much a 'f*** you' to the world. But as the record progresses, you begin to learn that, in your revolution - whatever that may be - you can't change the world around you; you have to change yourself. So it deals mostly with the beginning of my story and taking things back to growing up, and the resentment I had for not fitting into the perfect world, and Holy Wood is the name that I've given to that."

These insightful comments pretty much sum-up the feeling and overall messgage of the Album. It's a raw, violent, sarcastic and modern mix of all the things that Manson sees as an issue in every-day life.

Most of the album deals with the Columbine High School massacre, and the blame that was put on Manson. Songs like 'Target Audience (Narcissus Narcosis)' and 'Disposable Teens' not only directly referance the massacres in their title, but also speak of it directly in the lyrics.

Aside from all this, which furthermore adds to the image that Manson self-promotes, the album is still extremely mature and proffesional. He never once makes excuses or tries to push the blame to other things that influenced the killers, but rather expresses his dissapointment in the world today.

This album is a classic, especially in the Gothic Rock genre. It takes another turn in musical style from Mechanical Animals, which was primarily about drug-use, and Manson once agin displays his knack for changing with each album. Here, definately, he has succeeded and has produced his best work to date.

Here are my reviews for my favourite songs:

Target Audience (Narcissus Narcosis): An emotional and catchy rock song with great music. Manson's vlice is strained and stretched, and the feel of the song is dark and passionate.

In The Shadow Of The Valley Of Death: Possibly Manson's most emotional song to date, with hauntingly gothic lyrics which Manson sings with an evil and deliberate passion.

The Nobodies: More of a Punk feel on this song. Manson spits and scream the words out over yet another catchy chorus.

Lamb Of God: A catchy, basic, rock song featuring great vocals.

Valentine's Day: Maybe the best song on the album. A Classic, with gothic lyrics and Mansons trademark vocal style. Great guitar and musical accompaniements.

The Fall Of Adam: A strange, and completely addictive song with ambient acoustics at the beggining that lead into one of the catchiest chorus's ever.

Overall, this is a great album and any Manson fan should love it. A more rocky, in-your-face album that is extremely intelligent and down-to-earth.
