Free Music Review: one of the best CD's of the 90's
Hit: 5 Stars

People see Marilyn Manson and assume he's all goth and scary, which is probably true. Marilyn Manson has probably the worst reputation in the music business as well as the world. I thought so myself, until I head some songs off MECHANICAL ANIMALS. I just fell in love with them! They were amazing! The sound was extrodinary, the lyrics were suprisingly deep, and it wasn't just all goth 'ooh god is dead' stuff. Evidently, Manson changed from heavy metal goth rock to glam rock when he came out with 'Mechanical Animals'. Some say he is just trying to be like David Bowie- but if he is, isn't he doing a good job at it? Another reason I bought this album was because Manson's pal Billy Corgan [Smashing Pumpkins] helped produce the album, and most of the music was probably influenced somewhat by Billy Corgan as well as David Bowie and the whole Glam thing. This CD is not like Antichrist Superstar, but it does have the essence of Marilyn Manson it, so some songs are kind of dark maybe a little goth. The cover may freak some out, but it's part of Manson's new look- kind of as a mechanical animal alien type. Mechanical Animals is the 2nd CD of a trilogy Manson made... the first one was Antichrist Superstar, which basically told the world what he thinks about religon, the 2nd is Mechanical Animals and is mostly about people/society and drugs, and the 3rd is Holy Wood which is how Manson feels about his decaying world. I would reccommend both, Holy Wood has some softer and deeper lyrics (with the heavy metal) while Antichrist Superstar is more hard rock. Manson also is coming out with a new album, and has some other CD's, which you can check out. The big reason I love this album is the songs. They are amazing!
-Great Big White World: a slow but rock ballad about how the world is... I totally agree
-The Dope Show: a famous Manson song about drugs, and an excellent one too!
-Mechanical Animals: a kind of goth rock song with deep lyrics and a few acoustic parts that are quite touching
-Rock Is Dead: a hard rock Manson classic, an excellent song
-Disassociative: a slow rock song, pretty sad but very good, one of my favorites
-Speed of Pain: a sad acoustic rock ballad with deep lyrics
-Posthuman: a head banging anti-religon song that I love!
-I Want To Disappear: a glam-like rock song, one of my favorites
-I Don't Like The Drugs: a classic, deep lyrics, and totally cool and very catchy
-New Model, No. 15: a glam rock kind of song that I didn't like first, but I began to enjoy
-User Friendly: kind of harsh lyrics in this rock song, OK, but not one of my favorites
-Fundamentally Loathesome: a slow and sad song, I don't really like it
-The Last Day On Earth: a slower rock song, pretty good, not the best
-Coma White: my favorite track on this CD, an extremelly well done slow ballad rock song about Manson's battle with love and pills. A classic!
I hope my review of this amazing CD helped influence you to BUY IT NOW! IT IS WORTH IT! If you like rock, glam rock, alternative rock, you should buy this! Don't be ashamed if you don't really like Manson, this is an awesome CD. This was first Manson CD, and now I'm somewhat of a fan. If you enjoy Manson, this is a must have. SO GO BUY IT NOW!

Free Music Review: I was a hand grenade that never stopped exploding
Hit: 5 Stars

Marilyn Manson must have tired of the aggression that reached it's pinnacle on Antichrist Superstar, because "Mechanical Animals" was a huge swing off the beaten path. Where his slaving devotion to angry industrial Nine Inch Nails rock had been was suddenly replaced by a new concept. He was now a new personality, Omega and his Mechanical Animals. Like David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, Manson drenched himself in glam and made (in my opinion) his classic. If Anti-Christ was the drug fueled rage against the system, Animals was realizing the deflated crash.

That he slowed the beats down and explored the range of his songwriting gave Manson some much needed breathing room. This was the best gothic-glam theatre since Diamond Dogs [ECD] or Billion Dollar Babies. It's easy to be a shock rocker when the guitars are turned up to 11 and songs are played at 110mph. But slow it down to a grind and growl, like he did on "Dope Show," and the message gets into a lot more living rooms...terrifying the same parents who once defied their Moms and Dads by blasting Love It to Death. (And who will ever forget the video with the pink cops kissing each other? What better way to piss off your parents?) Add a mordant worldview that insists that everything is rotting on the bone ("Fundamentally Loathsome," "User Friendly") and that self-destruction is the only way out ("Dope Show" "I Don't Like The Drugs"), and you get suburban angst without peer.

Manson stretched in other directions, too. There are echoes of Pink Floyd in "Speed of Pain" and the brilliant closer, "Coma White." That kind of musical sophistication probably alienated his already alienated core of disaffected worshippers from pre-"Anti-Christ Superstar;" Manson's cleaned up music and international infamy was turning him into one of the "Beautiful People" he used to rail against. But as far as I am concerned, this was the last album im which Manson was really doing something dangerous. He made an album both bound to throw off the die-hards and still draw the ire of the God-nazis who looked at a rock singer as an acolyte of the devil. After this (and those stupidly misguided attempts at connecting Manson to the tragedy at Columbine), the albums retreated to the generic rock thrills of Holy Wood (In The Shadow Of The Valley Of Death) and Eat Me, Drink Me. While Manson still made his attackers look like blithering fools (never has a shock rocker been more articulate and equipped to take on his naysayers - I used to live for his stops at "Politically Incorrect"), he couldn't remake himself musically shocking after "Mechanical Animals."

Free Music Review: Manson beat Bowie at his own genre!
Hit: 5 Stars

This album is musically brilliant! Gary Glitter/David Bowie esque glamrock, with a slight electrosynth tinge.... ITS GOOD!

However, it is in the storyline where we find the brilliance on the record. Manson plays two characters in this, these being the "Marilyn" or good side, called Alpha, and the "Manson" or dark side, called Omega. Even though the caracters are the same person, they represent opposite sides of the personality, with Alpha being naieve, hopeful and somewhat charitable, whilst Omega is a cynical, bitter manic-depressive addicted to every drug in California.

As for the songs....

1. Great Big White World: Genuinely goregous glam track, sung by Alpha, as he is horrified by the conformity of our world.
2. The Dope Show: Musically brilliant, this lets us in on Omega's cynicism, and the emptiness of his fame.
3. Mechanical Animals: Alpha dealing with the mechanical nature of this "Bride".
4: Rock Is Dead: Industrio/Glam mixture, Omega bitching over the agonisingly ignorant criticism he recieves for being controversial. Damn catchy too.
5. Dissassociative: Omega overdoses on drugs (again), obstensibly for his depression, and reverts to Alpha, seeing the world as a "Dead Astronaut". Very Bowie, and very good.
6. Speed of Pain: Omega, now on a come down, vents his angst, and it is here where we first see his despiar.
7: Posthuman: Alpha, infuriated at the superficiality of our world and our religion, reminds us of the Antichrist Superstar and tells us to wake up to our god being a Statistic.
8: I want to dissapear: Omega, full of anger and frustration, blasts us in a punk sneer about how shallow he has become thanks to our screwed up society.
9: I dont like the drugs: Omega makes fun of all those who have supposedly 'given up' their addictions, but really traded in the drugs for the church, ending up with another addiction.
10: New Model: Omega raves about how the media is creating a new type of person, all shallow and "Homopolitan."
11:User Friendly: Omega is distraught, and now the sex is as mechanical as the people, with it being a weapon and not a f**kfest.
12: Fundamentally Loathsome: Omega resolves to end it all, not knowing what is real emotion, and what is preprogrammed.
13: Last Day on Earth: Omega reverts back to Alpha, and confesses his love for Coma White, and pledges eternal devotion. The most moving song on the album, and a good one too.
14: Coma White: The death of our Heroine, exiled from society for the 'crime' of individuality. Tragic ending, but beautiful...

Overall, this is Marilyn Manson's masterpiece. The music is far more sophisticated (and more rock than metal) than any of his previous efforts, and it has some of his best songwriting ever. It is deeply intellectual, it sounds great, and works very well overall.

Free Music Review: Innovative, inspiring, original, landmark
Hit: 5 Stars

On first hearing this album the day of its release, several words sprung to mind; innovative, inspiring, original, landmark. Many people hated this at first glimpse, claiming Manson had "sold out", "gone commercial", and lost his edge. I would have to disagree on all points. Did the band suddenly sign with Virgin? Did they make an album garunteed to sell billions and hit the top 10? Are the songs weaker or more "pop"? NO. They took a huge risk with this album. They risked their fan base, they alterred the image and the politics of the band, with no guarantee of success. But luckily, it paid off. While a large proportion of the fan base were repulsed by this album, turning on the band, forgetting the principle of a band evolving and maturing, a whole new fan base opened up. Suddenly a branch of older listeners began tuning in to the new, improved, mature Manson.

I have to admit, I did not love Antichrist, I found some of the racism and prejudice which Manson screeched about quite offensive. And credit where credit's due, the band changed all that for me. Mechanical Animals reverses some of the negative aspects of Antichrist, laying the cards on the table, saying "Hey look, Antichrist was just to get some attention, this is what I really think..." "Coma White" and "The Great Big White World" take the racism back, telling things the way they are. It is indeed a great big white world, and we ARE drained of our colours... This album launches the band away from metal resting them comfortably inbetween darkwave and industrial, with all the best bits of both integrated into one magnificant whole. The pounding of the anthemic "Rock is Dead" and "New Model No. 15" compliment nicely the slow, painful resonance of "I Want To Disappear" or "The Last Day on Earth". An even more magnificent combination than "Beautiful People" and "Cryptorchid". At last, something you can really let loose and dance to in a club, music with vitality and enthusiasm, music that sounds like the band enjoyed themselves creating it.

While lacking some of the playfulness of Portrait, and some of the squeeks and groans of Antichrist, Mechanical Animals does something different and insightful that no one has done since Trent Reznor recorded "The Downward Spiral". The influence of David Bowie and Marc Bolan hold a strong presence, but Manson is doing something new with his influences, rather than mimicking them, he is bringing them head first into a new era, to a new audience. This album truely reminded me of why I love music so passionately.

This album is a MUST HAVE for anyone who enjoys contrast in their music, because it offers a bit of everything you need from a band.
