Free Music Notes for Mechanical AnimalsFree Music Review: The Best Of Marilyn Manson Hit: 5 Stars
Before my first listen to "Mechanical Animals" I didn't really think much of Marilyn Manson. His previous albums seemed to chug along without much of a purpose aside from shocking his listeners (save for a few moments of "Antichrist Superstar") and the musicianship and lyrics left much to be desired. 1998's "Mechanical Animals" is Marilyn Manson, the man, the band, in top form. Probably their most shocking effort to date, mainly because it sounds absolutely nothing like what came before or afterwards. Loosely a concept album based around Manson's then love interest, actress Rose McGowan, this work is 80% tragic love story, 10% alienation, 10% isolation, with McGowan serving as the muse. Autobiographical tunes such as "I Don't Like The Drugs (But The Drugs Like Me)" and "The Dope Show" paint a picture of Marilyn Manson's high-speed lifestyle, the latter contains a line that pretty much sums up Manson and sets the tone for the rest of the album -- "I hate today/who will I wake up with tomorrow?" However, other tracks such as "Great Big White World" and "Mechanical Animals" expose a more emotional side while being the strongest and most sonically compelling anthems of Mansons's career. As you get deeper into the album, the lyrical content gets darker and the musical landscape is much more unqiue and abstract, best displayed on the moody and haunting "Speed Of Pain," a semi-acoustic song that sounds like vintage Pink Floyd. "Coma White," the album's closer is definitely the pinnacle, a passionate and tragic song that revolves around Manson & McGowan's unique relationship and contains the memorable chorus: "You were from a perfect world/A world that threw me away today." As a whole, "Mechanical Animals" is the strongest and most cohesive work the band has accomplished today. It is a genuine oddity and a downright shame that the standard set by this album hasn't been carried onto the following, less imaginative albums. Could it be a lack of inspiration? For by the time Manson recorded his next album, "Holy Wood," his relationship with McGowan had already tapered off. Could it be the self proclaimed God Of ____ found the one true love of his life? Who knows. All that is evident here is that there was an immense amount of inspiration and emotion poured into these 14 tracks. The one album by Marilyn Manson that I can personally put on and play the whole way through. You don't have to be a fan of industrial, gothic or metal music to appreciate "Mechanical Animals." If you are looking for a deep, personal and flat-out sad album, make this album next on your "To-buy" list.
Free Music Review: Marilyns Best Hit: 5 Stars
Maybe not his best look, but definatly his best CD. I've heard all Marilyns CD's and this one stands out the most. Dont get me wrong, I think all of Manson's albums are great, but pff who made Antichrist his "best"? this, Mechanical Animals in my point of view is incredibly under-rated! There should be a 6th voting button on this CD. I love their glam/rock sort of attitude and sound here. The first 6 songs are brilliant, their just pure rock. My favourite song on this album is 'Disassociative'. Their emotional too, and its good to hear a not-type-slayer-lyrics band for once. I would'nt call this C.D heavy. 'Great Big White World' goes for about 5 minutes, and has a fantastic solo in it. It's pretty slow at times. You've probably heard the big hit off the album, 'The Dope Show', Twiggy's best bass part ever. The chorus is cool, it's catchy, and his lyrics are meaningful, like always. The title song 'Mechanical Animals' is a CD highlight and Manson's voice is grunge style. 'They'll never be good to you, bad to you, they'll never be anything, anything at all.' In this song, Manson has a voice thing done to make it sounds cool. I don't like 'Rock is Dead' ANYMORE. 'The Speed Of Pain' would probably be my second favourite. The opening guitar riff is great. Done by Twiggy!... Remember? It's Marilyn Manson in the chorus also. Download this song to see if the albums for you. But after this its the end of the rock songs. Next is glam/hard rock. I love it. Their attitude is so cool. Skip 'Posthuman' though, that song sucks. 'I Want To Disappear', wow, Has a good bass part, and its fast, and again, Marilyn's lyrics...their...bad, in a good way course. 'I Don't Like The Drugs (But The Drugs Like Me)', is a single, but not my favourite. Another glam song? sure, 'New Model, no.15' Just as good as 'I Want To Disappear', (5/5), Their very alike. The chorus is very catchy, 'I'm the new, I'm the new, new model, I've got nothing inside, Better at the head, and better at the office'. 'User Friendly' is another glam rock masterpiece. His lyrics have gone very bad-ass here. I love all these songs! Except the next one... 'The Last Day on Earth' is another rock one. Emotional too. 'Coma White', ends the CD VERY WELL. Slow, and a little heavier at some times. Another single for the album. See the video. The bass part in this song is awesome, a lot like the others, but the solo is pretty bad. Buy this C.D right now, If you love real-rock, you'll fall in love.
Free Music Review: The Glamour of Drugs Hit: 5 Stars
Mechanical Animals focuses primarily on Mansons old drug addictions (about 99.9% of the album is about drugs). Manson's just taking a break from his themes of Anti-Christian rock and violence/... to talk about all that he and his band have been through i.e. drug addictions, M. Manson being blamed for the collumbine inccident, and all the pressures of being famous. This is one of his albums (like Portrait Of An American Family) which you either Love or Hate. I, for one... LOVE IT!!! The tracks on this album are slow, yet catchy. Here's my two cents... Great Big White World - My favorite song on the album! Great Lyrics, Guitar, And Keyboard! 6/5 The Dope Show - On of Manson best!!! An instant classic!!! 5/5 Mechanical Animals - Another favorite, great lyrics! 5/5 Rock Is Dead - Very catchy, sound great live. 4/75/5 Dissasociative - The intro has a neat techno/folk theme, It's another good one. 4.5/5 The Speed Of Pain - A slow very techno song, but not at all like "Cryptorchild" (from Antichrist Superstar) One person said this is Manson's best song. I don't know how He figured that. This song gets a little annoying after a while. 4.25/5 Posthuman - Very up-beat, but weird guitars. 4/5 I Want To Dissapear - Simular to "Posthuman", but noe techno 4.5/5 I Don't Like The Drugs (But The Drugs Like Me) - HELL YEAH!!! The 2nd best song! Great lyrics, female back-up the vocals. Funny music video. 6/5 New Model No. 15 - A very meaningful song, despite the title. One of my favorites. 5/5 User Friendly - A nice song about how Manson is tired of being "Used", NO, IT'S NOT ABOUT INTERNET PORN!!! 4.75/5 Fundamentally Loathsome - A slow ballad, for some reason the insterments remind me of "Dope Hat" even though their nothing alike. 4.5/5 The Last Day On Earth - A great song about..well...you know... It's sort of like "Great Big White World" part 2. 5/5 Coma White - *sniff* Who would dare to say Marilyn Manson isn't an emotional guy after listening to this!? This wonderful song is based on one of Manson's friends who commited suicide. 6/5 Overall... If your a new Manson fan, I reccomend the albums Portrait Of An American Family, Antichrist Superstar, Holy Wood, and The Golden Age Of Groutesque. But this album blows Antichrist Superstar out of the water, in fact this is my favorite Manson album! And thats all I Have to say about that... fin
Free Music Review: Marilyn Manson: MECHANICAL ANIMALS (1998) Hit: 5 Stars
In 1998, Marilyn Manson released his fifth album entitled, MECHANICAL ANIMALS. This album is amazingly incredible, and the second album in Manson's Gothic album trilogy (the first being ANTICHRIST SUPERSTAR). For this album, Manson added a new member to the band: John 5, for he is replacing Zim Zum, after he had made his departure from the band. But this album is simply amazing in every way. Seems as though that Marilyn does not get older: he gets better.
MARILYN MANSON: All Vocals
TWIGGY RAMIREZ: Bass and All Guitars
MADONNA WAYNE GACY: Keyboards and Piano
GINGER FISH: Drums
JOHN 5: Guitars
GREAT BIG WHITE WORLD
Great song to start off your fifth album.
THE DOPE SHOW
The first single from the album. I was already a big fan of Marilyn Manson's when I first heard "The Beautiful People", but when I heard this song for the first time, I became an even bigger fan. This is a great song, with a great, but rather strange, music video.
MECHANICAL ANIMALS
Great title track.
ROCK IS DEAD
The third single from the album. Also from the original motion picture THE MATRIX (1997). Great rock song. It was later included on the original motion picture soundtrack to THE MATRIX (1997), for it was to be the film's theme.
DISASSOCIATIVE
Great.
POSTHUMAN
A great song. I want to let it be known, if it is not known already, that Marilyn Manson's former fiancee, Rose McGowan (actress featured in SCREAM and JAWBREAKER) does backup vocals on this track.
I WANT TO DISAPPEAR
Great song.
I DON'T LIKE THE DRUGS (BUT THE DRUGS LIKE ME)
The second single from the album. Another great song, where in the video, Marilyn is featured with a new haircolor: blonde.
NEW MODEL NO. 15
Okay.
USER FRIENDLY
Great.
FUNDAMENTALLY LOATHSOME
Great.
THE LAST DAY ON EARTH
Great.
COMA WHITE
The fourth and final single from the album. This song is simply amazing, where in the video, Marilyn Manson and Rose McGowan portray the John F. Kennedy assassination.
A great album that I could listen to over and over again. All Manson fans should already have this awesome album.
Free Music Review: MECHANICAL ANIMALS- his best work? Hit: 5 Stars
Coming off all the hype surrounding Antichrist Superstar, Marilyn Manson decides to just DO SOMETHING ELSE. And boy was that a good idea. In chosing to turn from "Is this guy actually the Antichrist?!!" "Is he really that evil?" and "Is he for real?" Manson turns around and says "Ok! and now on to the next thing I want to do as an artist." AND ART- THIS RECORD DOES DELIVER. It's lyrically brilliant (some of the best Ive ever read), edgy, satirical, bleak, funny and moving. The songwriting is clearly better. It creates atmospheres reminiscent of BOWIE and GARY NUMAN's REPLICAS (The later of which, must have been a big influence) and shows off the band's knowledge of ROCK history. Not to mention they're skill at applying it.
The unfortunate dilemma Manson encounters, is that his "ACT" seems to be whitewashing his own creative brilliance. Or at least the misunderstanding of this "ACT." To clarify, his message and art exist on a deeper level than most are willing to look when confronted with his imagery and over-the- top theatrics. However, it is necessary to note that this misunderstanding itself is something he uses in his favor and incorporates into his art. To the trained observer, what you get when you actually give it a chance is one of the only relevant, "Real" Artists left in music. Complex, Intellectually profound, enigmatic, extremely well thought out, and creative entertainment. His blending of various elements from different genre's is not a crutch, but rather a tool he uses well to get a particular message across. It is a huge mistake to just toss this band aside, writing them off as High School rebel rock designed to make your parents angry. That in fact is PART of the "ACT" and just the tip of the iceberg. What MARILYN MANSON is doing is creating one of the most valid artistic statements of his time.
If ANTICHRIST SUPERSTAR said, " I have arrived...and you should worry." ( heh )
MECHANICAL ANIMALS added, ..." Because I know exactly what I'm doing."
In fact- he actually says that!!!
" I know what to do and I do it well.." from FUNDAMENTALLY LOATHESOME Track 12. And while we laugh at this pretense, we notice that it has been spoken in shame and apathy. Bravo indeed.
