Free Music Review: A Different Kind of Manson Hit: 5 Stars
In 1996, Marilyn Manson released the album "Antichrist Superstar". It sparked widespread controversy due to many people misunderstanding the theme. Therefore, many protested against their concerts claiming the lead singer of the same name preaches satanism. However, in 1998, they released the album "Mechanical Animals" that would explore a newer Marilyn Manson. They traded the unusual goth clothing for a glam-rock appearance that some say returns to the David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust days.
Aside the image, they experiment with different and more mellow rock sounds that match well with their wardrobes. Some songs contain other musical genres that offer the added creative sound: electronica and psychedelic rock. Such variety offers a great musical journey throughout the album, starting with "Great Big Wide World". Marilyn Manson, the band, wrote these songs wonderfully while never misplacing a note. Despite the more mellow approach, some songs remain raunchy as before. In fact, the lyrics give the mellow songs its signature edge. The newfound drug theme remains interesting, always keeping listeners' close attention to the words. Manson sings these them very expressively, keeping the hardcore edge intact. He screams them and croons them at the perfect moments. One must tremendously respect him for expressing such issues openly. Therefore, he speaks to a nation wonderfully.
Though the glam-rock phase was temporary, "Mechanical Animals" is an album that listeners will never forget. This is sure to please many rock fans.
Free Music Review: 1998's best rock album by far Hit: 5 Stars
1996 saw the release of Manson's Antichrist Superstar, the angriest, ugliest, and most provocative album of that year and one of the most disturbing (in a good way) recordings in rock. That album rightfully put Manson on the map as a challenging, abrasive, rule-defying rock icon who was loved, hated, but never ignored. The question remained, however: how could he possibly follow up Antichrist? How much more bitter and twisted could an album be? The answer: not much. So Manson did the only wise thing: he completely reinvented himself. The result is Mechanical Albums, a terrific piece of work that establishes Manson as more than just a nightmarish screamer. The album is full of great songs, great lyrics, and great production. The album is especially revealing because it presents an artist who is somewhat ambivalent about his hard-earned fame. The tension this produces in songs such as "I Want to Disappear," "Dope Show," "New Model" and others makes for highly listenable, memorable rock music. Which is a lot more than can be said for 99% of today's cookie-cutter, one-hit-wonder bands. Manson, who also explores such issues as drug abuse, gender, the emptiness of fame, sex, and pop culture at the millenium, switches styles with effortless ease. At times roaring guitars and pounding drums dominate, while other songs are actually quite delicate and heartbreakingly beautiful ("Speed of Pain," "Last Day On Earth"). Manson scores big here with 1998's best hard rock album by far. Check it out.
Free Music Review: The one album that reveals the depths of Manson's genius Hit: 5 Stars
Now, most of my musical reptoir consists of artists like The White Stripes, The Strokes, Blur, Weezer, The Cranberries, The Rolling Stones, The Who, and so on. In other words, I normally despise many goth/metal/shock genres. But there is something so beautifully poetic about Manson that stands out to me in a way that no musician - genre regardless - has ever been able to do before. I tend to dislike the more typical Manson songs, some examples being "This is the New *hit", "The Beautiful People", and other songs that are more shock than anything else. But his deep, emotional, painful ballads such as "The Speed of Pain", "Disassociative", and "Mechanical Animals" move me in such a way with their beautiful instrumentals, soul-flooding lyrics, and passionate vocals that I can honestly say they are among the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Particularly "The Speed of Pain", which starts out as nothing but vocals and an accoustic guitar and builds up until it reaches a full-fledged symphony of lovely echoing, enchanting sounds. That one five-minute song is an intense emotional experience in itself. Mechanical Animals is most definitely my favorite Manson album. I find it comforting when I'm in a dismal, desperate, depressing state of being. It's almost as if Manson himself is whispering words of comfort to someone he's never even met. He describes the pain everyone feels so perfectly in his lyrics and instrumentals. It's incredible, he's a genius. A true artist.
Free Music Review: THIS CD IS THE BOMB..FOR SURE! Hit: 5 Stars
marilyn manson really grabbed my attention when they performed'the beautiful people,' on the mtv video awards. the timing for them to do such a thing was perfect. it did not come off contrived and self-concious. it was at the end of the show and turned what was a dismally boring popfest on its head!!! i bought 'antichrist' immediately which i'd had before by the way, that i'd traded away as my mind was closed then.it is one of my faves that i'll never let go. it marks its spot in music history, and, is a masterpiece in its own right. when marilyn changed his image for'mechanical animals,' his timing again was spot on...even though he disappointed some if not a lot of his original fan base. but...what he did do was gain a lot more respect from people in the industry as well as gaining manynew fans. since music styles are eternally revisited it was time for glamrock to take another bow and mm did it beautiufully on this cd. this is a sonic work. deep and soaring. he proved himself to be a great singer. their ability to write music to reflect the past(especially bowie)without copying is a tough thing to do. this is one of the best rock discs of the 90's. pleeeaaase do yourself a favor and buy this cd! i like to listen to music while driving.i tend to be the most open then. do the same and i promise... sooner or later it will take you over. if youre not sure upon the first couple of listens..keep doing so..you to will be addicted. even robert hilburn of the l.a. times absolutely loved this disc. come on...go order it...NOW!!!
