Free Music Review: impressive
Hit: 5 Stars

This is another stage in the dramatic evolutionary process of Marilyn Manson, and a rewarding one at that. Who knew that the guy was so versatile? "Superstar" hinted at it, but this album has everything from from acoustic guitar ballads to slow swing to the familiarly hard-rocking hit "rock is dead." The tone ranges from self-deprecatingly ironic to cleverly mocking to wistful and despairing. The lyrics have improved; the band's namesake has a talent for wordplay and satire, and he flaunts it well. Mechanical Animmals also manages to maintain continuity both internally and with other albums; for instance, it hasn't lost the computerized voices and the background choruses. The little chorus in "the speed of pain" is vaguely reminiscent of the one in "cryptorchid" on the superstar album: ".. the angel has spread its wings, the time has come for bitter things.." One thing that I really like is the ironic "gospel" section at the end of "i don't like the drugs...". The title of the song is transformed into an anthem for the mechanical, hopeless people that populate the world of the songs. In this effort, Manson makes himself and his "message" more accessible and in the process accomplishes something great musically.

Free Music Review: Change Is Good
Hit: 5 Stars

Instead of making another ANTICHRIST SUPERSTAR, it's obvious early on in "Great Big White World" that Manson isn't afraid to take chances by drastically changing his sound, or his image. These songs are powerful and contain familiar themes of living in a fake and hateful society, but this time Manson also focuses greatly on the subject of increasing drug dependency by so many people in this world. Unlike ANTICHRIST SUPERSTAR, everything here seems a bit overproduced and arena-ready, but almost every track sounds amazing. The most impressive might be "Rock Is Dead" with its hurried pace and explosive chorus similar to the one in "The Beautiful People." Other notable songs include the somewhat overplayed "The Dope Show," the eerie ballad "The Speed Of Pain," the humorous "I Don't Like The Drugs, But The Drugs Like Me," the sweetly ominous "The Last Day On Earth," and the impressive closer "Coma White." Some people dislike Manson all together and others hated his drastic change of image, but actually it's refreshing to see at least one artist who understands that making the same song over and over again can get really boring even though it may increase chances of staying on the sales charts longer.

Free Music Review: Wow Marilyn, that's pretty good
Hit: 5 Stars

My last experience trying to get into Marilyn Manson was Lest We Forget, his greatest hits collection, which did absolutely nothing for me. Before, the guitars had no edge to them but instead sounded like someone just turned up the gain too high on their guitar and wanted to piss people off, on this album though the guitar sounds great and I see the talent.

There are great melodies here, and the album is primarily driven by a combination of riffs and beats that far exceed any Garbage record, and the Bowie influence is clear here. I was completely surprised to hear "The Speed of Pain" start with an acoustic guitar, shattering any preconceptions I had of Manson before. I was told this is the best place to start and now I completely agree, rather than just trying to offend people there is actual substance here, which is always a plus. There's no denying there is great music here, at times I forget completely that I'm listening to Marily Manson, whatever that image is anyway.

While some tracks are obviously not as good others, particularly the overlong industrial "The Last Day On Earth", anthemic choruses througout rock hard. This album comes recommended from a new convert, and if you listen to it I'm almost sure you'll be converted too.

Free Music Review: His other albums stinks
Hit: 5 Stars

But not Mechanical Animals. I have enjoyed reading the reviewers who hate this album because he does not resort to the same metal cliches that are reminiscent of NIN (only not as good) that infest MM's earlier albums. See, these people don't want to HEAR MUSIC - they want noise that doesn't truly move them. They just think the noise moves them and speaks to them because it's loud and discordant. You want loud, discordant, and moving? Buy a copy of George Crumb's "Black Angels" (Kronos Quartet performing).

This album contains songwriting, creative instrumentation, and well-written lyrics. Everybody in this band (M Wayne Gacy especially) truly came through in this album. The actual music takes you to a barren landscape in which you are seemingly all alone, but hear Marilyn Manson's voice singing to you. Sounds scary? Oddly enough, it's not. The lyrics of this song are at times wryly ironic, at other times strangely comforting. Everybody is down in the dumps at times (others truly depressed), and the lyrics deal with the issues...want an example? Listen to "Speed of Pain"...tell me that doesn't express how you felt when your girlfriend cheated on you (it did for me, at any rate).

...

The album is worth buying. I think you should do so.
