Free Music Notes for The Golden Age of GrotesqueFree Music Review: WARNING: BEST IF PLAYED AS LOUD AS POSSIBLE! Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this as soon as I could on the day it came out... Let me tell you, this CD is awesome. No... It's not that glam-rock Mechanical Animals, or Holywood, nor is it AntiChrist Superstar...... "This Is The New S[tuff]!!" This album goes in a completely different direction for Manson. There's much more of a beat-tastic/heavy guitar feel on here. It looks as though Manson, after two albums of experimentation after AntiChrist Superstar, has found an album worthy of following-up the goth-rock album that made scaredy-cat children and parents hide under their bed covers. I have always been a fan of his work, but let's face it, Mechanical Animals and Holywood just didn't cut it. This album.... Every song has good heavy beats with loud and powerful guitars. John 5 delivers an excellent guitar solo on Para-Noir and Tim Skold (the latest member since Twiggy's departure) bring the electronic edge that many fans have wanted from Manson. Don't be fooled though.... THIS IS A ROCK ALBUM!! No phony rap/rock/new metal crap here..... this is something new and different with hints of the old Manson such as on the track "Doll-Dagga Buzz-Buzz Ziggety-Zag." It almost gives a hint of stuff from SMELLS LIKE CHILDREN with a heavier beat. No, there aren't any hints of Satan on here..... this album is more of a middle-finger (which Manson does so well). It's refreshing to get an album like this that you can play loudly and actually shake a house down with! Asside from my beloved AntiChrist Superstar this is my favorite Manson album to date! He doesn't need Trent or Twiggy to make a [great] album after all!

The Reverend has come back and re-invented himself. I absolutely love it. I can see why Twiggy didn't wish to continue with the band...He didn't want to die his hair white! But Tim Skold is an AWESOME musician and technical artist who DOES indeed add a new dimension to this album. At first, I was reminded of Manson's collaboration with Trent Reznor - at the time, the god of industrial. The new programmed beats and cool noizes are fun to listen to. The choruses are catchy and the lyrics are awesome. But, best of all is how the artist has now become the art. The photos, artwork and stage show is what truly makes this new album great. It is the total package and Mr. Manson, I AM ENTERTAINED.Best songs: 2) This is the new sh*t: Right off the bat, you get to see Tim Skold's influence. Great lyrics to sing along to: Babble, babble 3) mOBSCENE: Super cheerleader section. Great MANSON rock. 7) (s)AINT: Reminds me of Antichrist, best part is when he breathes his name: aaaah...aah..aah...ah.ah HOLD THE S 11) Para-Noir: One of the best concept songs of all time. Such honesty from the women of the world... 13) Better of two evils: One of Manson's best songs of all time. You can actually bang your head and dance to this song all at once. The Skold influence rocks on this one. And yes, the included DVD begs that you sip your own bottle of Absinthe, sit back and watch this thing in the dark with some other demented friends. Reminded me of David Lynch on acid.
Free Music Review: The Golden Age of Manson Hit: 5 Stars
Another success of the rock grotesque master that proves that Manson is still a considerable part of the modern rock culture and a noticable sign of the current time in general.Even when he starts exploring some areas of the past, he links them closely with the reality of the present, efficiently showing that people have always been the same, and nothing in the habits, activities, and intersts of the people of the new cuntury is much different from those of their predecessors. The lyrics this time, as well as before, are a good chance to appreciate the smartness and cleverness of their author. And the ability of Manson to perfectly combinate good rock words with a nice heavy music is clearly present on this album as well. As for the music itself, we would probably find, as well as before, some techno and industrial elements, which add considerably to the general sound. But still the core of the sound keeps being a heavy guitar rock, and on this album, maybe even more than on the previous ones, the faster and harder tunes are dominating, and we have much less slower songs. Therefore the new album sounds much more whole, and makes it much easier to listen and enjoy. The list of better songs is almost endless and would definitely include This Is The New Shit, mOBSCENE, Use Your Fist And Not Your Mouth, sAINT, Ka-Boom Ka-Boom, Slutgarden, Spade, Para-noir, The Bright Young Things, and Better Of Two Evils. The must-have for any fan and a hard-rock lover.
Free Music Review: Finally! Hit: 5 Stars
After Portrait of an American Family and Antichrist Superstar, I thought Manson was unbelievable, unstoppable and put out some really, hard-edge, great music. Then he put out Mechanical Animal. I feared for the future of Manson & co. To say I was disapopinted is an understatement. Then, Holywood came and I thought, "well, its better than Mechanical Animal". I still was a bit bummed out because it just didn't have that edge that Manson of old had. It almost came across as if he felt like he had to shock. I don't know, whatever it was, it wasn't his quality stuff. Then came this album. I stuck it in my CD player, listened to the intro and thought, "not bad". Then, the first full song came on, "This is the new sh!t". As each word was screamed, a smile slowly came across my face. By the end of the song I was estatic! The track just plain rocked. But, my concern was whether he could keep it up throughout the album. I've been listening to this album non stop since the day it was released and I can say "yes", he kept it up. This album is definitely his best work since Antichrist. Powerfull, raw, emotional, even fun in some ways. This is a must have for any Manson fan. I must admit, my least favorite song on the album is mOBSCENE (its a decent song, just my least favorite). Some of the best tracks are: This is the new Sh!t, Ka-Boom Ka-boom, The Golden Age of Grotesque and Doll-Dagga Buzz-Buzz Ziggety-Zag.
Free Music Review: we're the low-art gloominati Hit: 5 Stars
With this album we enter the new era of the grotesque. The story and motivs that begun and made the ACSS-MA-HW trilogy is over, and now, instead of picking on religion and politics, manson decides to explore new things, specially his fascination with art, and his obsession with sexual fetishes. The result is a band that doesnt take themselves very seriously, but while this might represent a potential flaw, i think it is its greatest virtue.Inspired by the the glamour of 1930s hollywood and thedecadance of the cabarets in Weimar, Berlin, manson creates a "industrial-goth decadent-artrock", if such genre exists. I've seen a couple of burlesque shows, and the morbid/playful mood of it is all present throughout the album. The influence of this art movements is clearly noticed on the tracks Doll-Dagga Buzz-Buzz Ziggety-Zag and The Golden Age of Grotesque, probably the two highlights of the album. This doesnt means the other songs are bad, only that this 2 captures perfectly the scent of the age of grotesque. In my opinion, this is the best and most personal work manson has ever delivered. Trying to compare it with previous works, particuallry with their often called best album, Antichrist Svperstar, is absurd. We must understand that artists are always looking for new ways to express their ideas. This album is different then every previous work, but we must not take it as a change, but as an evolution.
