Free Music Review: The Bright New Era
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a perfect addition to the collection and a bright new step for Manson. Once again they've been able to compose an incredible album without replicating past productions. -That's not to say it doesn't have elements of past albums but it very much has its own style. If I were to compare it to any of their albums though, I would say it sounds like an album that could've came out between Holywood and The Golden Age of the Grotesque. -Fitting seeing how that's when one of the original bassist/guitarists (Twiggy Ramirez) left the band. Now that he's back I like to think of this album as `Twiggy's Golden Age of the Grotesque'.

Considering Twiggy was the bassist/guitarist for past albums such as Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals and Holywood you can expect good things from this album. He truly is a key ingredient to the Marilyn Manson that I've grown to admire. On a side note I'd like to mention how especially obvious it was that he wasn't involved with the last production Eat Me Drink Me. Personally I enjoyed most of EMDM but I believe there was a lack of creative impact, whether it was Twiggy's absence or Manson's wandering romance. Either way now you can definitely tell his influence is anchored deep within this album.

The High End of Low is hard to describe. It isn't necessarily thriving with industrial flavor and for those of you that heard the single We're From America it doesn't necessarily have a constant metal resonance either. It's a difficult one to put your finger on as it showcases several different styles: there are a couple of `twangy' metal tracks (Arma...geddon and I Have To Look Up Just To See Hell), several incredible ballads (Four Rusted Horses, Running To the Edge of the World, Into the Fire), a few industrial pieces (Devour, WOW and 15), some songs that are straight `Manson Metal' (Pretty As A Swastika and Wight Spider) and of course the Metal anthem (We're From America). Over all, my expectations were exceeded.

There are a few songs on here that while they are good, for Manson, they seem too simplistic (e.g. Leave a Scar, Blank and White and Unkillable Monster); too mid-tempo for me I guess. Thankfully there are fifteen tracks and more than enough exceptional songs to make up for the few that fall short. My favorites and ones I think you should give special attention to are Running to the Edge of the World, We're From America, Into the Fire and definitely 15. Other excellent ones worth mentioning include Devour, Arma...geddon, WOW and I Have to Look Up Just to See Hell. I'm on the fence about the lengthy nine minute I Want To Kill You Like They Do In The Movies. Actually more than any other song on here it reminds me of EMDM.

I have the alternate versions and remixes from the Deluxe Edition and personally I like all of the originals better or the same. The alternate versions aren't anything extra special but the Teddy Bear's Arma...geddon Remixes are excellent (both the Clean and the Explicit). If you're a huge fan though I would suggest you get them all.

If you're anything like me and especially enjoyed Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals, Holywood and The Golden Age of the Grotesque you should have a huge appreciation for The High End of Low. Once again Marilyn Manson never ceases to amaze me with their ingenuity and creative ability to reinvent themselves. -Manson said it best himself, he's "a hand grenade that never stopped exploding".

The High End of Low Poster

Marilyn Manson's anticipated reunion with longtime friend and foil Twiggy Ramirez inches closer with the release of "We're From America," the first listen from the forthcoming The High End of Low. The album's official first single "Arma... geddon" will arrive at radio Spring 2009. Manson's new lineup including Ramirez (for the first time in close to a decade), plus keyboardist Chris Vrenna, and dummer Ginger Fish, will close the main stage at the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, this July through August. Manson will also kick off his world tour with a headline festival run this June in Europe

Produced by Manson ,Vrenna, and Twiggy, The High End of Low was recorded in his Hollywood Hills studio and also features the track, "I Want to Kill You Like They Do In The Movies." Manson says of the new album, "I think my life definitely ended and began. The record sounds very final, but it's almost optimistic - though that feels like a strange word to use. It's a phoenix from the fire and a redemption resurrection."

Since emerging from South Florida (in the early 1990s), Marilyn Manson has continued to upend the mainstream with each new release. The tumultuous relationship Manson has cultivated with the public worldwide has resulted in multi-million records sales, sold-out tours, protests, legal battles, hate, adoration, award-winning distilled spirits (Mansinthe) and most importantly, a long list of some of the most enduring and genre-defying music in the rock era ("Lunchbox," "Sweet Dreams," "The Beautiful People," "Tourniquet," "The Dope Show," "This Is The New Shit," "Mobscene," "Heart-Shaped Glasses,"etc.) The new era of Marilyn Manson and The High End of Low begins now.
