Free Music Review: Great album marred by a dumb cover

Don't let the album's amateurish, adolescent cover put you off.* The music's great. And the other reviewers are correct when they say that Ms Monte has a smooth, sleek, sometimes-plaintive voice. This and "Rose and Charcoal" are her best CDs.
* In my prior version of this review some people commented on my disapproval of the cover drawings. The reviewer "exan" of December 20, 1999 pointed out that the drawings were an homage to Carlos Z?firo, and the reviewer David Land of April 11, 2001 said the drawings were art and encouraged me to "get over it." I can only say in response that (a) whether the drawings are an homage to Mr. Z?firo or anyone else doesn't mean they're not adolescent or amateurish and in fact "exan" even stated the drawing style was appreciated by teenagers, which tends to confirm my "adolescent" analysis and (b) whether something is "art" (a word mostly void of meaning because of its subjective nature) is irrelevant to whether it's amateurish and adolescent.
A Great Noise Poster
Marisa Monte is one of the great female vocalists to emerge from MPB (Brazilian popular music), and this part-studio, part-live offering goes a long way in capturing all of the facets of her style, from the softer tones of "Blanco" to a rhythmic, energetic cover of George Harrison's "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)." Monte is nothing if not eclectic, leaping from Caetano Veloso's wonderful "De Noite Na Cama" to the '50s Brazilian standard "O Xote das Meninas." Sympathetic production from longtime collaborator Arto Lindsay adds a great deal, but at the end of the day it's Monte's voice and powerful personality that are stamped all over this disc. The 11 live tracks are particular standouts because of the relentless drive behind them. Both sexy and sensual, Monte never needs to belt it out; her slinkiness is all that's needed to keep things purring along. A true star. --Chris NicksonInternational Music CDs
