Free Music Notes for Sailing to PhiladelphiaFree Music Review: Wonderful CD!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I heard the song 'Sailing to Philadelphia', and I fell in love with it. The lyrics and the story behind are so unique in an age when music rarely means anything. My favorite line has to be 'Now hold your head up Mason, see America lies there...'. When you listen to the song, you can almost see Mason and Dixon arguing about the dangers they will face while drawing their famed line. The song has the rare power to draw you into its world, so rich and beautiful a world that you hate it when the song ends and you have to listen to it again and again. Knopfler has such a beautiful voice, and James Taylor really adds a lot to the song. Of course, 'Sailing to Philadelphia' isn't the only good thing about the CD. The rest of the songs are excellent, as well. I love the duet with Van Morrison, and 'Speedway at Nazareth'. Knopfler's music is so refreshingly meaningful and well performed that this CD gets five stars. 'Sailing to Philadelphia' is now my favorite songs, and Mark Knopfler one of my favorite artists. Highly recommended!
Free Music Review: Takes you to guitar nirvana Hit: 5 Stars
I purchased this CD based on Rolling Stone's review of the Best of 2000. It was even better than I expected - I can get lost in Knopfler's powerful sound. Each track is unique in its story and has its own style, with the one constant being the guitar work of a master. Knopfler is one of the few musicians whose guitar work I can instantly recognize. You won't find any 3 1/2 minute packaged hits here - most of the songs are at least 5 minutes, with wonderful solos.Being thirtysomething, I tend to purchase more classic rock than anything else - but this is a new album worth investing in. This is rock music which acknowledges its roots in blues and country and folk. His duets with James Taylor and Van Morrison are examples. And don't worry about the last few tracks that you can't sample here - this is not a case of filling up empty space at the end. "Nazareth" and "Silvertown Blues" are two of the my favorites.
Free Music Review: Wow!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I give this five stars not because it is his best work ever (in my opinion that is on "Love Over Gold" and "Brothers In Arms"), but because it is his best solo work to date, and it is very good. But remember, this is a MK solo album, not a Dire Straits album. Although to me, with just slight changes, it could be a Dire Straits record.Upon the first listen I knew that I was hearing what would soon be one of my most listened to discs. I'm not going to run through every track, but the album is very atmospheric with much more synth work than on "Golden Heart". Also, there is none of the Celtic influence that was present on "Golden Heart". I think the overall style compares favorably with "Brothers In Arms". The album is a nice mix of Rock, Blues, and a touch of Country influence. If you enjoyed "Golden Heart", and are also a Dire Straits fan, you will like this album.
Free Music Review: Knopfler's best album Hit: 5 Stars
I thought the Dire Straits album "Brothers in Arms" was Mark Knopfler's last great album. But he's back on his game again with "Sailing to Philadelphia".The opening cut "what it is" is a real grabber that reminds me of the old dire straits music with guitar out front driving the song. Then comes the beautiful ballad "sailing to philadelphia", which is a duet with James Taylor. The 2 most radio ready songs on here are the very catchy "who's your baby now" and "do america". Both great pop songs. But my favorites on here are "el macho",a great driving home late at night song. And "speedway at nazareth", which has a slow buildup to great exchange between violin and guitar solo's. This album has a lot of diversity, which is what makes this so enjoyable. I think Knopfler's finally found his groove. One of the best albums of the year.
Free Music Review: Chef-d'oeuvre!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Mark Knopfler always seems to outplay his last performance exponentially. This album surely is a masterpiece in every respect, cooked with the perfect ingredients of highest order: style, rhythm, lyrics, voice, composition, and not to miss his terrific guitar work. Every track on the album has something substantial to say and has a unique and fresh perspective; a trademark of Mark Knopfler. I bet you would never skip any number, in fact would like to repeat each one of them. Not unlike all of Mark's previous albums, this one also is not just about melody, harmony, and rhythm but has plenty more to offer. If one would be looking for the keywords of this work, the list would go like: mellow, touching, thought provoking, vivid, rich, classy, ingenious, simplicity, variety' Kudos to Mark Knopfler for creating this gem and of course to the recording engineers for an immaculate work!!!
