Free Music Notes for Shangri-La

Free Music Review: Mark Knopfler - Shangri La
Hit: 4 Stars

Takes awhile to become familiar withs the selections but the stories are all interesting, especially after you hear them a few times. Liked "Lonnie Donnigan" the most.

Free Music Review: Growing up
Hit: 4 Stars

As one who grew up in the UK with Dire Straits and still regards them as one of the best rock bands ever, I wasn't disppointed in Shangri-la at all. As Mark Knopfler and I have aged over the years, we've both mellowed, changed moods and tastes and it's as if he knows where I am in my own aging process. It's his lyrics, always thoughtful, often surprising and that familiar guitar sound, that gives much to enjoy on this album. It's not over-produced and leaves behind haunting melodies to carry around. Mark Knopfler has a way of making you "see" his music. "5:15 a.m." becomes a story that you can visualize: you can see the Jag driving up the Great North Road and the working men's clubs. Kudos to Mark for paying hommage to both the late, great Elvis and Lonnie! Even if your political views don't quite mesh, "Don't Crash the Ambulance" is a not only well written but prescient. It's a song that doesn't pull any punches, with guitar and harmonica work that seems out of place with the lyrics but somehow fits so perfectly. Add: "Everybody Pays," Shangri-la," "Whoop de Doo," "5:15 a.m.," "All that Matters," and the catchy "Postcards from Paraguay," and you have my favorites.

Free Music Review: A little less than expected
Hit: 4 Stars

I expected more guite solos and more rock-music rather than quiet country style. Knofler should have stayed with Dire Strait

Free Music Review: Short Stories
Hit: 5 Stars

Until the last 10 yrs or so I never really "listened" to Mark Knopler seriously. I remember the moment I really "heard" one of the most beautiful songs of my life, the song "On Every Street". I have no idea why, but it makes me almost cry thinking about every time I hear it. From then on I loved Mark Knopler's music and really appreciated it. Now back to this current CD, I must admit that when I put it in my CD player in the car I was disappointed, but like the other reviewer that mentioned listening to it alone, I replayed it when my head was clearer. And then I got it! This CD is more of a personal listening experience than anything else. The stories told are very touching and you really understand the short stories when you listen carefully. For me this CD is a joy to listen to and I only hope that the listeners appreciate Mark Knofler's skills and gifts he shares on this CD.

Free Music Review: Mark Knopfler is Mark Knopfler - Wouldn't have it any other way.
Hit: 5 Stars

A true companero and more than worth los dinero, even if you have to rob a bank to get it! Mark Knopfler is at the top of his gig here. There's no shortage of great guitar work, and like his other solo releases, the story telling is top notch!

Rock, blues, country, salsa, and more styles of music intertwine here than in any other album I've heard. You can't help but learn while being entertained by Knopfler's stories about ill-fated big-shot crooked gamblers, Ray Crock (the man behind the McDonald's fast food chain), go-go club owners, bank robbers, lovers, boxers, and presidents.

Shangri-la is a collection of great stories put to crisp, well produced, and certainly well played music. Fun, dramatic, touching and spirited songs from one of the music world's greatest original talents.

I read a review that said that Mark Knopfler's solo material is a far cry from Dire Straits. That's because Dire Straits is Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler is Mark Knopfler. Life is about change, experience, adventure and fun. Every CD by Knopfler is a step forward, and I enjoy making the trip with him.
