Free Music Notes for Shangri-LaFree Music Review: Great listening music... Hit: 5 Stars
I find that this album is very soulful and soothing. Some of the tunes make you feel as if you are in a paradise...it is an easy listen. Perhaps the thing I found to be this album's greatest achievement was the recording quality. This is as good as I've heard as far as perfect, dynamic music goes. Knopfler's voice and guitar work sounds so lifelike, like he's playing in the room with you. Its hard not to appreciate music like that. Favorite tracks are : Own Shangri La, Everybody Pays, and of course Boom Like That. there are really no tracks that I dislike, but some are not as interesting. Knopfler shows frequent songwriting brilliance despite his more reserved guitar style. Nevertheless, it all just comes together in an album that is worth owning if you like ANY of his prior work including that of the Dire Straits. Get it.
Free Music Review: Now THIS is music! Hit: 5 Stars
First, I should say that this review is biased since I'm a HUGE Knopfler fan. That's not to say, however, that I think every album he has released is an instant classic. Some are better than others, Shangri-La is one of the good ones. Ragpicker's Dream and Sailing to Philly were both fine albums, but weren't solid all the way through. Shangri-La offers up a very enjoyable 60-something minute listen. In my opinion, MK's songwriting ability is second to very, very few. The songs on this album are evidence of this. Several of them are among some of his most melodic work ('Shangri-La', 'Everybody Pays', and 'Postcards from Paraguay' among them). All in all, a very mellow album, with intricate guitar work and great lyrics. He is a master at telling stories with song. Check it out, you won't be disappointed!
Free Music Review: BOOM, LIKE THAT!!! BEST ALBUM OF 2004 Hit: 5 Stars
Mark Knopfler just keeps making great music with a passion that I don't see as much in some veteran rockers. I was listening to KFOG San Francisco when "Boom, Like That" came on, and immediately ordered the new album (The album was out only three days) His timely tale of the birth of the McDonald's hamburger empire (and Ray Kroc's hostile takover of the McDonald brothers business in San Bernardino) was rightly written, with Mark's guitar so gentle yet rockin' that it harkened back to the early Dire Straits era of the late '70's. Stunning to say of 5:15 and Shangri-La - He made the album right here in Malibu with a close knit order of musicians that Mark wanted to have in order to get the 'sound' right. Well, he did it!! A album to have if you like Mark at his best!! Peace - JG "Bear"
Free Music Review: beautiful chapter Hit: 5 Stars
This is probably Mark's best solo album. His voice is in top shape, after all these years, at an age when many singer's voices start to decline. The songs are just great and work really well together - this didn't happen with «Ragpicker's Dream», in my opinion. «Shangri-La» has less solo guitar than his other works, but Knopfler's efforts are clearly concentrated on song craft and that's not necessarily bad. It's a nice change of pace and he's a great composer, anyway.
There's wit, poetry and a great song for Sonny Liston, again inspired by a book, («Sailing to Philadelphia», was inspired by Thomas Pynchon's novel «Mason & Dixon».
Being a longtime Straits/M.K. fan, I have to say that his career is truly a progression and this is, no doubt about it, a beautiful chapter.
Free Music Review: You will find what you want. Hit: 5 Stars
Sometimes you just want to hear a song that tells a story. Other times you just want to sit and listen to a guitar master do his magic. With this album you can, and do, get both. There is a South-of-the-border feel to several of the songs on this album, but that just serves to make the experience more varied. More effort is paid to the lyrics than the "licks" in this album, but if you are a fan of Knopfler's quitar work, there is still plenty to listen to on Shangi-la. The eclectic subject matter that you have come to expect from Knopfler is here in force, so along with NASCAR, centuries old surveyors, and Napoleonic war veterans you can now add Elvis Presley, Lonnie Donnegan, Las Vegas, and Ray Kroc. So turn down the lights and be entertained, a master is in the house.
