Free Music Notes for Shangri-LaFree Music Review: Feels like meeting a old friend in your hometown! Hit: 5 Stars
I must admit that it sounded different when I frist listened to it. Recording technique seemed a little different, Mark Knopfler is a little forward. But, he is great, just perfect for this type of recording. Couldn't be any better. You listen to it and you put the CD aside, but after a while you want to listen to it again. You miss the tunes and the notes left in your ear is not as good as listening to it again. If you are a Mark Knopfler fan, if you like "Golden Heart", if you listen to "Sailing to Philadelphia" then, it is highly possible that you are going to like this too. The first two tracks are so good that you listen over and over again. In the following tracks, I think, the lyrics get a little important but still very relaxing and enjoying.
Free Music Review: Superb! Hit: 5 Stars
I'm a big fan of Dire Straits, and have recently started listening to Mark Knopfler's albums. The Golden Heart album is as good if not better than any of Dire Straits' releases, although the music is of course somewhat more mellow than the rock bank. Shangri-La is the second of MK's albums that I've purchased and it ranks close to Golden Heart in pure listening pleasure. Needless to say, I'm sold on Knopfler. With 14 songs and over 60 minutes of great music you get a lot for your money. Postcards From Paraguay, 5:15 A.M., and The Trawlerman's Song are my favorites, but all 14 of the songs are good. As a songwriter, I think Knopfler is as good as Lennon/McCartney, Elton John, or Paul Simon, but like Dire Straits, he's underrated and unappreciated.
Free Music Review: a complete return to form for the master Hit: 5 Stars
after the rather downplayed ragpicker's dream and the scratchy sailing to philadelphia, mark knopfler displays the kind of songwriting genius that has won him fans and critics around the world. shangri la is a wonderfully mellow and fleetingly sublime album that capture the essence of a good melody while driving emotions right through the heart. from the opening subtle drama of "5.15" to the delightful "boom, like that" and the mellow "shangri la" and the funny "whoop de doo" knpfler shows stunning touch and musical form in this collection of high quality delights that are consistently listenable.
a must for all knopfler fans, this is also a wonderful place to begin if you have heard of but never heard this great singer-songwriter.
Free Music Review: Knopflerhead Hit: 5 Stars
I find this album to be another mature step in Mark's career. Great project! The album moves at a perfect mellow tempo and sports new gems I'll be listening to for a while. I feel there will always be guaranteed satisfaction with the group of guys Mark plays with, namely Bennett and Fletcher.
I get pretty disappointed in people when they feel they automatically need to compare latest efforts with earlier efforts, etc...Take it as another step, another project, and stop trying to find the Dire Straits in his material. His signature guitar/voice will always be present in most of the projects he undertakes.
I will thoroughly enjoy this new gift of music...
Free Music Review: Tastefully done (As always) Hit: 5 Stars
Mark Knopfler is one of those guitarists who has the chops to take over a song on the strength of his solos, but to his credit he uses this skill and ability sparingly. As he has aged, his music has matured as well. Shangri-La is the perfect example of how musicians learn as they get older. Knopfler writes on the fringes of autobiography. The songs may be about his life, but you would have to look hard (and make the case for it) if you want personal details. The songs are all wonderful, but as a musician I found his take on Everybody Pays to be right on. It has been postulated that Knopfler has more music than words. This set of songs shows that he is equally gifted in both.
