Milton Babbitt has always been a conundrum for even the most sophisticated audiences of 20th century music. Babbit, who died at age 94 (May 10, 1916 - January 29, 2011) witnessed all the changes in classical music in his lifetime and yet never strayed form his own creative genius, defying the media and the naysayers that his music made no sense by continuing to experiment with electronic music and build synthesizers on which to perform his strange music. But now in retrospect his music does not seem all that strange to a public who once avoided performances of his works. One of his last pieces - the Concerti for Orchestra - was actually lauded by both audience and critics.
On this recording the Phoenix Ensemble pairs two works for String Quartet and Clarinet - the relatively benign (but sensuous and somber work by Morton Feldman (January 12, 1926 - September 3, 1987) and the plucky, wonderfully disjointed piece by Babbitt. Both works deserve more exposure (and perhaps now with the loss of Babbitt there will be more performances of this work), and when paired as they are on this excellent recording the present a gamut of musical possibilities that become intoxicating with repeated listenings. Babbitt's work, for this listener, is the stronger of the two - one of the more accessible pieces for the general audience he created.
