Free Music Review: A talented Singer Songwriter
Hit: 3 Stars

Mark Selby is a talented singer songwriter, with a rocking attitude to boot. I saw him (and equally talented wife-partner Tia "Hope You Dance" Sillers) a couple years back and was taken by his easy command of guitar and nice touch with song structure.

He is best known for is collaborations with Kenny Wayne Sheppard instant blues-rock classic "BLUE ON BLACK". Selby played a more and more prominent roll in aiding Kenny Wayne thru his 1st trio of CDs before completing being cut off on the disappointing 4th release by KWS.

Here on Storms, Selby covers familiar Middle American rock and roll more in line with Bob Seger or John Mellancamp than the Americana of his sophomore effort, simply entitled "DIRT".

MORE STORMS open up with a lightly funking "DON"T YOU THROW THAT MOJO ON ME", featuring tasty slide guitar and backing vocals by session sensation Bekka Bramlett. It is a strong opener.

If you crave Stonesy blues-rock then "SHE'S LIKE MERCURY" rises to the occasion. Obvious to me was that Selby spent his midnights rambling thru his Rolling Stones albums on the turntable. Here the Glimmer Twins supply the shelter and inspiration, right down to its patented Keith Richard-like guitar solo, which rolls on like a lost Stones outtake. I know it's only rock and roll...but, I liked it.

The third cut, "I'M THE LUCKY ONE" would have felt right on early-80's Seger's Mainstreet style Not a bad thing but I felt this album found Selby searching for a style of his own, while portraying the artists that had most affected him as an up and comer. Who knows, maybe the record company controlled what made the disc (or didn't). He would not be the first guitarist who sold his soul to the devil at the cross roads of his career.

"YOU'RE GONNA MISS MY LOVE", four tracks into the CD, might have the most bite. The band is tight and his vocals assured. I love a funky drummer. Keyboardist Reese Wynans holds his own, while bassist Denny Dadmun walks the bass affectively into the fade out. Again the backing vocals of sturdy vet Bramlett let's you know the storm is indeed coming. This cut reminded me of the long-lost cult-sixties psychedelic one-off by Max Frost and the Troopers. Remember "SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME"? "MISS MY LOVE" followed a similar rhythm but rocked hard especially toward the end, where drummer Chuck Fields drives a groove, double-time, thru the close. Nice! Let's give the drummer some, as James Brown once shouted out.

I felt the disc lost a little focus toward the middle before picking up toward the last couple of tracks.

ZZ TOP at the Bottom of the CD? Yep. Selby should be paying royalties to the trio from Tejas for "SATISTFIED". Almost bar for bar this tracks beards "LA GRANGE". Not a bad thing cause this track rocks as hard as any thing TOP or KWS can do, but man does he rip off LA GRANGE.

Selby closes with a smoky acoustic title track.

All in all a solid debut hit or miss at times, not wholly authentic. If you are looking for a place to start, I'd suggest digging up Mark Selby's second release "DIRT".

More Storms Comin' Poster

By now, the world ought to know that Mark Selby was the songsmithing genius behind Kenny Wayne Shepherd's massive hit "Blue on Black." Clearly, someone figured out that there's probably more where that came from; hence, Selby's own debut, on the venerable Vanguard label. Indeed, this album contains all the necessary ingredients: blues-rock riffs chock-full of crunchy goodness; workmanlike lyrics with just enough wit to be clever, but not so much as to sound pretentious; and a backing band that sounds as if they're having the time of their lives. If there's a failing here, it's that the album is occasionally a little too glib, and when Selby tries on a ballad or a bit of acoustic blues, it doesn't quite come through. When he rocks out, though, he's capable of transporting the listener to a sweaty blues bar at 2 a.m., full of hard-core partyers making a mockery of last call. Selby's greatest asset is that he has the same unpretentious charm that's made Tommy Castro so well-known. May it serve Selby equally well, if only because the world does need more songs like "Kink in the Chain" and "Smoked." --Genevieve Williams
