Free Music Review: Soon Enough It Won't Be Long Before They Do It Again
Hit: 5 Stars

R&B Pop band Maroon 5 Archieved something very unusual with their 2002 debut album "Songs About Jane". It started very slow on the album charts and the single "Harder To Breath" reached a decent #18 spot in 2003. One year later the almost two since the album was released the second single "This Love" was released it became a worldwide smash (#5 in the US) that just didn't want to fall of the charts. The band continues their success with two more singles, the love ballad "She Will Be Loved" reached #5 and "Sunday Morning" #31. Over 3 years later after the release of their debut album, it was still on the charts selling pretty damn well. In the meantime, they've been taking some time off with other activities, touring alot, singer Adam Levine also appeared on other artists albums (Kanye West, Natasha Bedingfield) and eventually they started recording their sophmore album called "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" which is apparently based on a intern joke. With the success of their debut album, they've had all the time in the world with this project and the expectations are sky high. Hopefully this won't end up as a sophmore slump?. Read on my review to find out.

California quintet Maroon 5, one of a few good bands that combinate rock, pop and R&B with mainstream success have been doing all they can to make another success story. This time around they get help from Dr Dre Protegé Mike Elizondo who also produced Natasha Bedingfield's second album that Adam Levine appeared on and then multi-talented producer Mark "Spike" Stent who's been procucing evrything from No Doubt to Britney Spears and Eric Valentine who produced the Queens of the Stone Age. With good prodcuers like this, it's obvious that they want to record an album that is a modern as possible, with stylish arrangements and fresh sound, and having 3 completely diffrent kinds of them also make this sound interesting before even listening through it. If they can create as good lyrics and melodies as on their debut album, this is going to be a smash. After listening through it a few times (which you should) it becomes evident that their sophmore got huge potential with almost immaculate production that suits their music perfectly and some of the songs are made for big things, just like on their debut album they have created some fabolous melodies and hooks that match the prodution well.

The album contains 12 songs, starting with "If I Never See Your Face Again" a very catchy retroish R&B influented pop song which after a few listen becomes irressistable. First single "Makes Me Wonder" that even topped the charts for a week is brilliant and very meliodic. I think the song is about being in a relationship with someone that you don't really like. "Little Of Your Time" is more rock infleunced with some basic riffs, lyrics are not so deep and feel like more of a easygoing sing-a-long song. It barely over 2 minutes which is rare!. "Wake Up Call" should be the second single, a polished rock song with great hook, that deals with cheating. Will be a hit. A great power ballad called "Won't Go Home Without You", got everything that a good song should have. Another "She Will Be Loved" perhaps?. "Nothing Last Forever" a sweet slow-paced song about the inevitable breakup in a relationship when two people turn out to be too diffrent, even if they still love each other. Another fantastic song which got the same hook as the West/Levine duet "Hear Em' Say". "Can't Stop" a rock song with plety of grit, is completely diffrent from the previous song, still good. "Goodnight, Goodnight" a sad and melancholy power-ballad where Levine appologized for hurting a girl. Retro sounding "Not Falling Apart" which is another bad realationship song makes it obvious that they are influenced by New Wave bands, the song is strong and grows on you for each listen. "Kiwi" is one of the songs I don't really like alot, I can tell you it's not about the fruit. However, it got alot of raw power and nice horn sounds. "Better the We Break" a classic ballad that is very slow and sensitive. Levine must have listened to Phil Collins's "Face Value" with all these depressing relationships songs. "Back At Your Door" a soulish ballad that sound polished but not flashy, could have been a early hit for Hall & Oates. There are plenty of bonus songs on diffrent CD versions, the song "The Way I Was" a b-side of the "Makes Me Wonder" single SHOULD have made the final cut, cause in my oppinion it's one of the finest songs they ever did. If you get the chance, try to listen to it and see if you agree with me.

Overall, the expectations were sky high after the success they had with "Songs About Jane" but infact their sophmore album "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" is even better. I rarely give albums more then 4 stars, but with an album that combinates great lyrics with irressistable melodies/hooks with an immaculate production let alone that most songs deal with relationships and are part of a concept that works all the way with it's 12 songs. No filler, just well penned class songs that gets better for each listen. When alot of other musicians these days are more focused on sound and riffs/beats, Maroon 5 both have a distinctive sound and songs that ALWAYS have a melody and fine hook. Having said that, it takes a few listens to like some songs but when you have done that this should be a more then pleasant listening experience to you too!...Making this one of the best albums of 2007 so far.

It Won't Be Soon Before Long Poster

Global neo-soul rock superstars Maroon 5 are back with their much-anticipated sophomore album, It Won't Be Soon Before Long. The follow-up to the 10x platinum, Grammy-winning Songs About Jane will be "sexier and stronger," according to frontman Adam Levine, who looked to '80s icons such as Prince, Michael Jackson, and Talking Heads for inspiration. Recorded at home in Los Angeles with producers Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Eminem), Mark "Spike" Stent (Bjork, Keane, Gwen Stefani), Mark Endert (Madonna, Fiona Apple), and Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Nickel Creek), the album promises to be a louder take on the pop sounds of their first effort. "It's definitely aggressive, upbeat and pounding," says Levine.

Sometimes it's O.K.--even important--to put aside your reluctance to embrace artists who make teenage girls scream. It happened in 2006, when Justin Timberlake scraped the sludge off pop and left something shiny behind, and it's happening again in 2007 with Maroon 5. It Won't Be Soon Before Long, the L.A. band's sophomore studio disc, rode in on a crest of hype and crumpled expectations--fan reports had it that Adam Levine & Co. scrapped their signature pop-soul sound for something harder and darker. Not so. Shades of Prince, Hall & Oates, and Sting still color the Maroon sound (check out the spectacularly fizzy "Little of Your Time," as well as the first single, "Makes Me Wonder," a song catchier than fire), but they're made ever fainter here by the clamping down of five guys on what is essentially the most distinctive pop sound to emerge from a single band since the Bee Gees squealed into the mid-'70s. It Won't Be Soon squares hip-hop sensibilities ("Wake Up Call") with rock ones ("If I Never See Your Face Again") and stormy moods ("Can't Stop") with bittersweet ballads ("Better That We Break"). It's a disc destined to defy detractors and go on to greatness, elevating the credibility of teenage girls for years to come. --Tammy La Gorce
