Free Music Notes for Songs About JaneFree Music Review: A Somewhat Disappointing Experience Hit: 4 StarsOkay. A short guide to the reviews of this album. You can probably ignore about three fourths of the five star reviews and all of the one star reviews right now. I've read them, and let me tell you - the talent some people have for hyperbole is impressive. This is a pretty average collection of music, so far as they go.
Since they started as Kara's Flowers back in the nineties, this band has been trying to sound like people that came before them, whether they know it or not. Their first record (rather poorly received) was a sort of post-grunge pop rock along the lines of Matchbox 20. Their second CD (with a new member added, which, I guess, is where the 5 comes from) is instead a wholly pop-oriented effort in the lines of the pop-piest of Stevie Wonder and the various boy and girl acts. The music, as a result, is somewhat unsophisticated and not really very innovative, which is fine. For what it is (a mainstream pop record), I'd say that this offering is about average.
So in a hundred years, the universe will have forgotten that this record ever existed. That's fine. The question is, is the music okay to listen to now, and will YOU like it if you buy it? Unfortunately, that's also a complicated question to answer. Once again, the marketers have set up a situation where all the radio singles sit on the extreme edges of the music that you get on the album. That's kind of dishonest, because if you're going to buy the record expecting twelve tracks of "This Love," you WILL be disappointed. Most of the rest of the record is considerably less up-tempo, I wouldn't consider it to be particularly dance-able (though I don't dance), and lacks some of the catchiness that drove the first two album singles.
What you DO get is, as I said before, a thoroughly average pop record. While the sound is different, the experience is similar to what you'd get if you grabbed any random pop singer's record off the rack and went home with it. It's mostly vanilla filler - somewhat cliched lyrics, a little bit of piano, and some watered down funk grooves.
For my money, I figure it's worth the nothing that I paid to Columbia House to get it, and maybe a few dollars more. Amazon wants $10, and at that price, it's a reasonable purchase. I do play the music when I'm at work, if only because it blends into the background of what I'm doing pretty well. It's not music that requires attention, investment, or energy. It's a lot like a CD full of the radio station that EVERY city has that's specifically designed for you to play at work. Pretty bland, all told, but bland can be good. I'm hopeful about the group. If they can focus their attention and talents on the more hook-ey sounds of "This Love" and "Harder to Breathe," they could be a solid act. Just don't buy the CD with the wrong impression as to what you're going to get.
Free Music Review: I slept on this CD. Hit: 4 Stars I have had this CD for a couple of years, but apart from harder to breathe, and This Love, I wasn't feeling this CD as a whole. Fast forward to April 2007. I put the whole album onto my MP3 player, and like wow! It was like listening to a completely new CD. The first song that lept out at me was 'Sweetest Goodbye', which I kept on constant auto play, great song. Then 'Secret' wrapped it tender grooves around my ears, soon followed by 'Tangled'. Now I'm at the point that I can listen and appreciate and listen to the whole CD. The funk/soulfullness of this offering, allied with Adam Levines great vocal are a devasting combination that works, and works throughout this CD. Can't wait for the sophmore joint.
Free Music Review: very happy with my purchase! Hit: 5 StarsLove this cd and it came in perfect shape and fast. Thank you!!
Free Music Review: Unbelievable Album Hit: 5 StarsThis album is unbelievable and a pleasure to listen to. In fact I cannot stop listening to this album and all the songs are good, but also catchy. You be listening to the album everyday anticipating their new full length album and wondering if they can make a better album than this first album and not a sophomore jinks that most new artists with great first albums fall into, which is probably what is causing them so song to come out with another full length brand new album with original songs. If you do not like this album you must be insane or just not like pop music.
Free Music Review: This CD is great! Hit: 5 StarsThis CD has become one of my favorites - I can put it in and it never gets old. The fast paced lyricss and music make this Cd fun to listen to. The slower songs have an "Secret" appeal to them.
