Free Music Review: TMV just keeps getting better
Hit: 5 Stars

The Mars Volta is one of my favorite bands, and they just keep getting better. Amputechture is definitely my favorite TMV album, which is awesome considering how much I love De-Loused and Frances.

Prior to listening to the record I was worried because I knew John Frusciante layed down all the guitar. Nothing at all against Frusciante, he's a great guitarist. But Omar has a really unique style of playing guitar that has helped shaped TMV's sound. But to my joy, it was incredibly easy to forget Omar wasn't playing guitar on this record. Frusciante did a phenomenal job at temporarily adopting Omar's style for this record.

As always, TMV is superb lyrically. This record is no different. "We'll cover the smell with silver nitrate, mending the cuts of your prosthetic faith" - Tetragrammaton.

Musically, everything's top-notch. There is more diversity in this album than in any of the previous work. Cedric's got more emotion in his voice. And there's just such a great balance of energetic and calm moods. Also, even though these songs are long, don't expect it to be like Frances the Mute where there's an incredible amount of ambience. Amputechture is definitely not like this. In my opinion, there's almost no real filler in this album. Pretty much everything that you hear needs to be there and it's not just thrown in there.

Vicarious Atonement - You instantly hear a side of TMV that's never been heard before. This track's very soothing and a great intro track. 9/10

Tetragrammaton - Clocking in at over 16 minutes, I never get bored. There's so many lyrics in this song which is so great for such a long song. This is one of my favorite songs on the album. At 7:49 the song kicks from soft to energetic and Cedric's voice is very different than anything you've ever heard from TMV. It's some wacky loose singing. In this verse this is also where he sings the extra-peculiar lyric "The kiosk in my temporal lobe is shaped like Rosalyn Carter". This song is a journey in itself. Phenomenal work. 10/10

Vermicide - As of right now, this is my favorite song on the album. It's definitely the most radio-friendly (which it surprises me so much they picked Viscera Eyes for a single and not this song). The focal of this song is definitely the chorus which has been stuck in my head almost constantly since I bought the album a week ago. Like the rest of this album, there's no real way to explain these songs, you just have to hear them for yourself. 10/10

Meccamputechture - Comes in suddenly with Cedric singing in a much faster-than-usual pace. And it kicks in really energeticlly. The lyrics in this song are top notch and probably, in my opinion, the best in the album. This song has just such a great groove to it. 10/10

Asilos Magdalena - Phenomenal song. First thing people'll probably notice is that it's completely in Spanish. And if that makes you weary in the first place, then you should open your mind up a little more in the first place. This is definitely the most minimalistic song on the album. Perhaps the most minimalistic song TMV has ever written. And it leaves Cedric open to shine emotionally very well. Like Vermicide, the focal point of this song is definitely the chorus. I think this song is very beautiful. 10/10

Viscera Eyes - The beginning riff is one of the catchiest things on the album, for me. I have trouble getting it out of my head. "Your convalescent thorns are but a crown of maggots", so freaking good. I think the chorus is a little weak in this song (from "In Your Viscera Eyes" and down), which is okay because the verses are very very strong. This is the only song on the album I become bored from. The instrumental parts just don't excite me, but that's just me. They're definitely good parts, just don't do it for me. So yeah, for me, the songs starts off great but then trails off. But it's still a great song. 8/10

Day of the Baphomets - This seems to be one of the most musically impressive songs I've heard from TMV. The bass in the beginning is sick. And when it kicks it - highly energetic. The horns accompany the song so well. I think this song shows another side of TMV that's never been seen, but we've all known was there. At 9:50 the song hits a very crazy salsa-like part which is so awesome. And at first you may think it has nothing to do with the rest of the song, but if you listen, the '1/8d - 1/8d - 1/8d - 1/8d - 1/4' timing is still there. And the song ends up coming back together at the end. Phenomenal song. 10/10

El Ciervo Vulnerado - The song is reminiscent of the first song. And this song is definitely put at the right place as it kinda drifts away. In my opinion, not a realy strong stand-alone track, but goes great with the album. And I also don't like how at the end it just cuts out. Because it drifts and fades and then all of a sudden it just stops, I didn't really like that. However, while Cedric is singing the song is great. There's alot of emotion in the music I think. Just very spacey/calming. Good song, just doesn't stand up to the rest of the album. 7.5/10

Overall - 4.7

Amputechture is the best chapter in the TMV saga yet.
