Free Music Notes for Marshall Crenshaw (Dlx)

Free Music Review: Let's reconsider the term "one-hit wonder," please ...
Hit: 5 Stars

Billboard magazine duly and officially notes that Marshall Crenshaw had but one top-40 chart hit: "Someday, Someway," which appeared on his self-titled 1982 debut album. (Robert Gordon released his version of the song shortly before that). Younger, less knowledgable radio listeners and programmers who lump all things '80s into one pixel (Hey! A Flock of Seagulls, The Go-Go's, Phil Collins AND Black Flag!) might regard Crenshaw's nerdish schoolboy look and toss him into the same thrift-store pile as the skinny ties and the legwarmers. But to those of us who grew old and/or bald (or pregnant or fat or blase or at least wrinkled), Marshall's first album is just plain timeless. You don't have to listen to it every day, but I'll pull it out every so often, and it's the first blush of spring all over again; the world is full of wonder and sun and limitless possibilities, with every night another star-filled chance to go rockin' around in NYC with your dream girl. It's like having a personal fountain of youth the size of a drink coaster.
It also goes without saying that the fact that Marshall had but one solitary chart hit is one of the greatest injustices in a pop music history full of them.
When "Marshall Crenshaw" was first released as a 12-song LP in the spring/summer of '82, the album ran 12-deep. Still does. It was evident even without knowing his history that he went deep (he was John Lennon in a touring "Beatlemania!" production, would later sing Buddy Holly's posthumous "Peggy Sue Got Married" in the high school reunion band in the film of the same name, then play Holly himself, doing another posthumous tune, "Crying, Waiting, Hoping," in "La Bamba"). It was as if he swallowed an AM transistor radio set to WABC and -- voila! -- spit out an intact album of hit pop songs.
Some of the tunes had the rock'n'roll bounce in abundance (the classic "Someday," "She Can't Dance," "Rockin' Around in NYC," and "The Usual Thing," with a harmonic touch of the Everlys). Some had a soulful ache ("Mary Anne," "Not for Me"). One was an actual soul remake ("Soldier of Love," an early-'60s Arthur Alexander hit). Then, there was "Girls." It was the '80s reincarnation of "Groovin" by The Rascals, a lazy soul tune also created with a beautiful summer afternoon in mind -- only, this being the '80s, it wasn't a song of bliss, but rather the euphoria he felt at the sight of another pretty girl walking down the street, quickly followed by the usual unstated heartache of unrequited lust. It was the perfect moment on a near-perfect album.
Again, why this most wonderful of pop/rock discs never became the most popular album of its time is beyond me. Back then, it settled nicely at No. 2 behind "Pet Sounds" as my favorite album of all time; all these years later, it still sits on a lofty pedestal, in a warped trinity of sorts along with "Pet Sounds" and "Black Monk Time" by The Monks.
And the folks at Rhino did a wonderful job with the 2000 CD re-release -- and the extras. Having grown up near New Haven, Ct., when WPLR was still good, Marshall's live '82 version of Holly's "Rave On" from Joe From Chicago's show on PLR, originally a B-side, was a welcome addition. So was the VERY Beatlesque "You're My Favorite Waste of Time," originally on a Warner "Killer B's" collection. So was "Starlit Summer Sky," a sweet '79 demo of a tune that had turned to "Starless Summer Sky" by the time it made his "Miracle of Science" album. And the live tunes included two glowing testaments to the soul of the Detroit area in which he was raised: The Parliaments' "Look What I Almost Missed" (when George Clinton still had a pompadour) and Edwin Starr's "S.O.S."
It you're still a young music fiend, chances are if you buy this collection now, you'll still be babbling enthusiastically about 23 years later like I just did.

Marshall Crenshaw's self-titled debut arrived at a time when post-New Wave rockers were examining the music of past decades and adapting its sounds and attitudes to their own. Crenshaw's dead-on melodic sensibility, empathetic lyrics, and deeply ingrained sense of pop structure and sound made the record 1982's best. This special edition--intended, like the "hits" package This Is Easy, to reintroduce the singer to the audience he's always deserved but often failed to find--includes nine bonus tracks that collect some fine rarities (the cheeky B-sides "You're My Favorite Waste of Time" and "Somebody Like You") and illuminate Crenshaw's deep connection to older soul and rock. To hear Crenshaw and band play obscurities by the Miracles, the Parliaments, and Edwin Starr to roaring early-'80s crowds is to be reminded of a brief but highly optimistic era that Crenshaw's vision all but personified. --Rickey Wright
