Free Music Notes for This Is Easy: The Best of Marshall CrenshawFree Music Review: He only makes it sound easy... Hit: 5 Stars
Those of us who have listened to and loved Marshall's work for years owe it to him to buy several copies of this CD and distribute to the un-anointed. This is the first truly great pop collection of the century. I saw and talked with Marshall several years back in a small club in LA where he performed many of the songs on this collection; I could not believe this great talent was on stage knocking out these remarkable songs for only a dozen or so people. Most singer/songwriters would sell their soul to write even one great classic song and Marshall has bunches of them to spare, this hits package is a good overview. Now lets get busy and spread the word!
Free Music Review: A Perfect Introduction Hit: 5 Stars
As compilations go, this had to be anything but easy. With so many pieces of ear candy to choose from, how can you narrow it down to 80 minutes' worth? Still, they did an excellent job. Save for the exclusion of "Fantastic Planet of Love," this has as much of the cream as you can pack on one CD. In case one wonders what to buy after you're hooked on this genius, the debut is absolutely essential, followed by a masterpiece generally overlooked by critics (not to mention this collection), Life's Too Short. I would put money down that those three discs become some of your all-time favorites. But, by all means, start here!!!!!!!
Free Music Review: could be longer Hit: 5 Stars
I think that the only complaint I would have about this CD is that it could be longer. For example, I would have liked another cut from "Good Evening" called "Whatever Way the Wind Blows."As other reviewers have pointed out, Crenshaw is an outstanding and overly-neglected talent. Good melodies, a clean sound, much of it with a driving beat. Somewhat comparable to the early Beatles in the 60's, to Warren Zevon or Jackson Browne in the 70's, or to Bonnie Raitt in the 80's and 90's. Only Clive Gregson is more overlooked as a pop talent ("Home and Away" being his best work).
Free Music Review: Great compilation of Crenshaw's best songs Hit: 5 Stars
Thank god Rhino had the wisdom and guiding principle to gather Marshall Crenshaw's best material and package it so nicely. The tracks are chosen with loving care, paced nicely, mastered well and embrace the essense of his songwriting mastery. There are a few gems here I hadn't heard in awhile and it was pure pleasure to hear them again. The first track I'd never heard since it pre-dated the self-titled "debut" album. Crenshaw is one of those truly gifted musician/songwriters whose stature will grow with time.
Free Music Review: Don't Miss Out on Marshall Crenshaw Hit: 5 Stars
Marshall Crenshaw, as others have pointed out, has in mystifying fashion never been the pop sensation he should be. Snappy tunes, catchy rock hooks and intelligent lyrics abound. For people who like Elvis Costello, Crenshaw's music is somewhat reminiscent and equally good. This best of compilation is a superb introduction to some of Crenshaw's best songs. My favorites are all here including: Someday, Someway, Cynical Girl and Whenever You're on My Mind.
