The history behind this recording alone is a reason enough for piano music fans to get it. It is really great that such a gem was not kept locked in a drawer for good! For me, Fryderyk Chopin is the greatest piano music composer there is. My music teacher used to tell me that his music, perhaps more than any other's, allows a performer to express himself/herself thoroughly. Notably, tempo changes are a characteristic feature of the Polish composer's music and make it possible for every player to feel a composition in his or her very own way. That's exactly where Martha Argerich shows her class. Yes, she is passionate and vigorous, it is her primary feature, but also her sustained and soft playing is stunningly emotional. The mazurkas included here, especially No.s 37 and 38, are a good example. Argerich's victory at 1965 Warsaw Chopin competition is also a testimony to this. The Poles have always claimed they know "their" Chopin best and they feel it when someone plays his works well. The best performance on the CD is the final movement of Sonata No.3, the Finale, teeming with glorious virtuosity. As Suvi Raj Grubb writes in what later happened to be the liner notes, it was recorded in one flawless take. Splendid. The Polonaise No.6 is highly passionate piece and played in this manner alright, although some false notes occur now and then; however, it does not matter in this case, the sheer musical power here is overwhelming. By comparison, listen to Maurizio Pollini's version recorded for DG label -- his version is more polished and in my opinion better than Argerich's. Scherzo No.3 is also played very well, but I know a better version; on a rarity CD Rachmaninov Plays Chopin (RCA Victor Gold Seal), the maestro Rachmaninov himself performs this scherzo and the contrast between low chorals and sparkling high cascades in the middle of the piece is puzzling indeed! Overall, though, this disc deserves 5 stars. Martha Argerich was in top form in June 1965 and the sound is also very good. Here, the title 'legendary recording' is no exaggeration.
Martha Argerich Plays Chopin: The Legendary 1965 Recording PosterARGERICH MARTHA CHOPIN: THE LEGENDARY 1965 RECORDING Record-label politics prevented this awesome recording of Argentinean pianist Martha Argerich from being released for 34 years. The spitfire musician delivers a powerful set of Chopin's best-loved works that still sounds riveting today. Intense and gorgeous. --Jason Verlinde How can it be that a recording by one of today's indisputably unequaled pianists performing some of her prime repertory--made fresh within months of her triumph in the 1965 Warsaw International Chopin Competition--could languish for decades in the vaults before its official release? Chalk it up to the exclusivity clauses of rival recording companies and legal constraints from which not even Wotan with the help of Loge could extricate himself. Thankfully this belated EMI release--recorded in a few sessions at the Abbey Road studios--is finally available. It's a significant complement to Argerich's other accounts of Chopin on disc. From the white-hot intensity of Argerich's way with the composer, you can easily extrapolate a sense of what had recently wowed the jury in Warsaw. The Argentinean pianist undertakes the Third Sonata as a vast, big-voiced, far-reaching statement that encompasses both molten power and moments of almost unbearably intimate lyricism (listen closely to her gestures of illumination in the Largo). With a characteristically unforced spontaneity, Argerich sounds the shattering chords that launch the finale (recorded in one take); her sense of flow in the Nocturne No. 4 is a perfect mesh for the illusion of improvising that is so central to Chopin. She commands the logic--both emotional and musical--of the composer's skittish turns in the Scherzo No. 3 and crafts three of the mazurkas into perfectly chiseled character pieces. The sheer force of Argerich's personality might seem overwhelming to those accustomed to a tamer Chopin--listen to how she dives into the A-flat Polonaise--but it's always at work dusting off tired clichés and uncovering the music's expressive wealth. For those who know about Argerich's artistry, this disc is indispensable; anyone who has yet to make that enviable discovery will find it (together with the Argerich anthology in Philips' Great Pianists series) a great place to begin. --Thomas May
