Free Music Review: Martin Gore's Counterfeit2 - Let's give Martin a chance!

Brief summation: This album is a fantastic showcase of Mr. Gore's vocal, musical, and arranging abilities, accessible to most audiences (specifically, those with any penchant towards synth/electronic music). Do not expect to see any Martin Gore songwriting here!
First of all, I am a huge Depeche Mode fan (the band that allowed Mr. Gore to attain the majority of his fame) and have done no small amount of research on the band and its members. The first thing you have to know about this album is that Martin DID NOT write any songs, so please do not expect an album of Gore originals! This is an album of other artist's material - cover songs, if you will. The reason, you may ask? Mr. Gore himself has admitted that he's not a very prolific songwriter, and he prefers to keep his original songwriting for Depeche Mode. Nothing wrong with that, and we Depeche fans will always appreciate his songwriting work. You may note that his choice of songs for this album very closely parallels the same themes that Mr. Gore himself uses in his own songwriting.
What this album will do is showcase Mr. Gore's incredible singing, musical, and arranging talents. His voice is at turns a tender whisper and a passionate growl on this album, portraying the tenderest love, deepest depression, and the hungriest lust. His vocal range is showcased considerably well with these songs, as well. One may notice his incredible ability with harmonies with a number of tracks.
Another important thing to keep in mind: Martin's penchant for synth-pop, electronica, or however you want to classify it, is definitely obvious in the arrangements. However, that's Martin, and that's the musical course he's chosen for himself. If you're not a big fan of synth-based music, you may not like this album. Although an astute listener can tell that by the choices of music Mr. Gore has made, many of his musical influences are much older and more varied than simple "synth-pop" might lead you to assume. The arrangements range from simple to complex, spare to lush, all very appropriate to the song, but all share the synth/electronic thread. I firmly believe that this album is quite accessible, even if you're not a Depeche Mode fan. I personally greatly enjoyed the electronic bent that Mr. Gore has lent to this wonderful collection of songs, and feel that the arrangements are excellent, on par with anything Depeche Mode has released.
Overall, I hope you will keep an open mind and allow yourself to be drawn into the wonderful, and powerful world that Mr. Gore has created with this album!

Featuring classic tunes by Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Kurt Weill and John Lennon. 11 tracks. Mute. 2003.Counterfeit proves that Martin Gore has exemplary taste in music. The Depeche Mode songwriter's first full-length solo excursion is a covers album in the tradition of David Bowie's Pin-Ups. The 11 selections range from obviously classic works by rock lords Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Brian Eno, Iggy Pop, and John Lennon; to a pop-trash wildcard--a winsome version of David Essex's "Stardust." What?s more, most of the songs fit in with Depeche Mode?s fascination with masochism, drugs, decay, and disillusion. The problem lies in Gore's lack of emotional and musical range. Fans will take great comfort in the set's familiar moody minor chords, electronic touches, echoing darkness, and Gore's vocals. But the end result is uniform in texture and tempo, and songs as originally powerful as "In My Time of Dying" or Cave?s "Loverman" just seem to float into the background, deprived of edge and individuality. Still, Gore plays Weill?s "Lost in the Stars" piano-and-strings straight, and seekers of tasteful ambience may enjoy the idea of various cult rock, folk, and country songs being transformed into Mode-ish mood music. --Garry Mulholland
