Martin Taylor is a brilliant virtuoso guitarist, who is possibly heard best in his solo work. He can play quite effortlessly in the style of Django Reinhart, gypsy style, in a Spanish style, or in various other modes of jazz.
However his CDs always seem to have a tendency to veer towards "smooth jazz" at some point, and to me this detracts a bit. This one is a bit of a curate's egg--good in parts.
This album starts out with the stunningly brilliant Gypsy Medley, which is several minutes long and is almost worth the price of the CD on its own.
However several of the tracks feature Dave O'Higgins on saxophones and it seems to me that these tracks are a detriment to the whole album which one might want to rename Spirit of Kenny G. whenever O'Higgins inserts his saxophone stylings which have a decidedly unmellow and irritating tone and are made redundant by the presence of the accordion, with which I have no problem.
I know this sounds like a bitchy review, but you will have to listen to the recording for yourself to see what I mean.
Otherwise the CD is excellent, and my only other quibble would be that there is a considerable overlap in content between this and Taylor's other CDs Best Of Martin Taylor and Celebrating Grappelli. The last named may be the best of his group work, though the solo album is probably the one to get.
