Free Music Review: Timeless....Is The Correct Title
Hit: 5 Stars

I wasn't surprised when i heard Martina was doing a classic country covers album.Considering she grew up on these songs. This has become a new fad in country and elsewhere in other music genres to make a covers album.Which ain't a bad thing. It's good to hear the classics with a fresh new sound. This collection of songs will stand the test of time.Inside the booklet Martina explains the nature and story for each song, which helps give the reason why she chose each song. She mostly tried to stick to the original version of each track. The real neat thing about this album was to make it authentic so the recording equipment was all pre-dated.All the microphones were all made before 1968.The one mic Martina used all through the recording sessions was a mic made in 1939! All the guitars and amps were all made before 1965.So authentic they really tried to cut.Martina wasn't sure if there would be a difference in the sound.I can't tell if there is.As for the song selection, many of these i remember hearing growning up as my mom played them on her records,(and 8 tracks). How can you go wrong with "....Rose Garden","Help Me Make It Through The Night" or "Satin Sheets"? Many people have said Martina lacked emotion in these songs.I think the reasons why it didn't feel or sound like Martina to everybody else is because these songs aren't known as "Martina repertoire" or style. It sounds different since we are used to Martina soaring and emotional voice in the country almost pop music she does.I think once you listen to the album enough it will grow on you.Enjoy!

Free Music Review: Martina McBride (Timeless)
Hit: 1 Stars

McBride does not do justice to the great old songs she is singing. She sings the words, but there is no emotion, no feeling. The music is sterile. It seems as though she just wants to get through the songs as quick as possible and be done with job. The instruments backing her up are similarly uninspired. Their music is bland at best and could have been mailed in. I regard the money I paid for this album as poorly spent.

Free Music Review: Four and a half stars, actually
Hit: 4 Stars

I confess that I was a bit wary when I learned of Martina McBride's intent to release an album covering classic songs; I usually enjoy her performances, but she has a terrifically familiar style, and I was concerned that these songs would wind up being her going through the motions of presenting herself through these songs. I am pleased to discover, however, that this album showcases the songs, giving McBride an opportunity to remind us why these songs have held up for decades. This album serves as a brief tour through a hall of fame of writers, with songs by Hank Williams, Buck Owens, Don Gibson, Harlan Howard, Buddy Holly, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bill Anderson, Merle Haggard, Hank Cochran, Kris Kristofferson, and others. Best of all, when McBride performs "signature" songs, she does not attempt to wrest them away from the famous performers--her version of "Help Me Make It through the Night" reminds us that Sammie Smith had a great song from which to build an iconic performance; she does not try to out-Loretta Loretta on "You Ain't Woman Enough," and while her performance of "(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden" will not replace Lynn Anderson's, it stands proudly next to it. McBride subtly claims a place with the great performers with these songs. If only this album did not rely so heavily on the rhythm section in the production--the thudding bass/drum adversely affects songs such as Holly's "True Love Ways," for example--it would be too good to be true. As it is, it will enjoy heavy rotation around my house. It's a pleasure to hear it.

Free Music Review: Captures the emotions and energy of classic country
Hit: 5 Stars

The other night I fell asleep watching TV (imagine that). When I woke up there was this woman singing. My first thought was, "Whoa! This lady can sing". I had no idea who she was and the station never announced her name. It was eleven PM and I wanted to go to bed but I had to find out who this singer was. So I went to the TV station's website and looked up the time slot. It said, Martina McBride in concert. Although I had never heard her before, I knew I wanted to hear her again. Begrudingly, I went to bed. The next day I order this CD from Amazon.

Ms. McBride sings with a passion and energy often associated with early country music. Like the early artists, she counds as though she really feels the music she sings. There is a genuiness about her that is most refreshing. I'm totally impreseed.
