Free Music Review: Martina is a "Butterfly"... this album is "So Magical."

Martina McBride is one of the true marvels of country music. She manages to create catchy, meaningful music which mixes just the right amount of pop and country roots. With 1999's Emotion, McBride offered twelve grounded tunes with brilliant melodies and phenomenal vocals. The same is true for her 2003 effort, tentatively titled Martina. On this album McBride elaborates from Emotion, offering the same style of tunes but this time tinged with a few traditional songs and one live performance. The album begins with "So Magical," an Irish-sounding tune about the simplicity of life and its magic. This theme somewhat continues to "She's A Butterfly," a positive tune about a woman who has found liberation. "City Of Love" is one of the songs on the album that showcase McBride's truly amazing vocal talent, as well as "How Far." "This One's For The Girls," the first single, is an upbeat and irresistible song with a feel good "girl-power" theme. Towards the middle of the album, McBride sifts back to her country roots with two songs that might seem out of place if not for the diversity of McBride's music. The religious, Ricky Skaggs penned "Reluctant Daughter" and the subtle moral message of "Wearing White" are nice surprises to this collection of songs. "When You Love Me" and "Learning To Fall" are perhaps the most pop-sounding songs on the album, and both are extremely well written and performed. "In My Daughter's Eyes" is a meaningful ballad that sends a very positive message. "God's Will," arguably the best song on the album, is perhaps the most moving thing this listener has ever heard. The song, which is about a little boy with some type of disease who brings light and truth to those around him, never fails to bring tears to my eyes. Martina continues her tradition of truly meaningful songs with this selection. The last (or second to last, depending on which version you own) song is an outstanding live performance of the classic "Over The Rainbow." If the album is purchased at Wal-Mart, a bonus track called "Show Me" is featured. This bonus track is my second favorite on the album next to "God's Will." It is a truly unique song with original lyrics, featuring picturesque visuals from all around the world. If the buyer has the opportunity, I suggest buying the version that features this extra track. As always, Martina continues to be one of country music's true gifts. Her vocal range and selection of songs makes her one of the finest of her craft, and this album is a wonderful next step in that journey.

Audio CDMartina McBride is something of a marvel. Throughout her career she has managed to walk a tightrope between Nash-Vegas commercial concerns and the high art of well-crafted songwriting and serious singing that makes up modern country at its best. Her hits in the Nineties ("Wild Angels," Independence Day," "Life #9," "Safe in the Arms of Love") were beacons of light in a darkness of clichéd and over-produced cowboy-disco tunes. Martina continues her tradition of tasteful tune picking and powerful but never over-the-top vocals. "This One's for the Girls" mines much missed Mary Chapin Carpenter territory, while tunes like "In My Daughter?s Eyes" and "So Magical" (with its scenes of rural bliss) stay safely this side of excessive sentimentality thanks to McBride's considered performances. Even pop tunes like "When You Love Me" and "Learning to Fall" are kept country with an emphasis on guitars, fiddles, and steels over syrupy synthesizers. Throughout, producers Paul Worley and McBride herself give Nashville lessons on how to make a record that is shiny but never slick. Finally, her live performance of "Over the Rainbow" is a lesson on delivering a show-stopping vocal with minimal melisma and maximum soul. --Michael Ross
