Free Music Notes for Martina McBride - Greatest Hits

Free Music Review: Ten years of great pop-country music
Hit: 5 Stars

Martina's career started slowly as her first album (The time has come) did not sell in vast quantities. I did buy it - and I've been a huge fan of Martina's music ever since. Fortunately for me, Martina's second album contained Independence day, the song which really launched her career and ensured that she could continue to record high-quality music, culminating in this Greatest hits collection, which contains all the essentials.

Martina has a big voice and uses it to great effect on all types of song. Many of her hits are upbeat, happy songs, typical of modern country music. There are still people who think country music is full of sad songs with not much cheer - such people should listen to some modern country - very different from the way things once were.

Happy girl (from her fourth album, Evolution, the one that really confirmed her as a major star) is not only typical of the songs Martina records - it also describes herself. Other great upbeat songs include I love you, My baby loves me and Whatever you say. Even in modern country, there is still room for the occasional sad song, represented here by Concrete angel and Love is the only house. Despite these songs, the overall feel of the album is upbeat. Stranger was not released as a single, but has become popular with fans, so it was included instead of Cheap whiskey, a minor hit from her first album. It's a pity they didn't include both.

Martina made some of the best pop-country music of the nineties and had some success in the American pop charts while maintaining her credibility with country fans.

Free Music Review: Giving Country A Good Name
Hit: 5 Stars

Possessed of one of the most compelling voices in the genre of country music, Martina McBride is also one of the few artists in that particular genre to give us a steady output of consistently excellent material, as this compilation attests to. She's also that rare breed that can gravitate successfully between serious subject matter('Independence Day', 'Love's The Only House') and more lightweight fare('I Love You', 'My Baby Loves Me')with relative ease. Though she does latch on to an occasional clunker--the sappy 'Wrong Again' ranks among her absolute worst, despite being a #1 single--for the most part she's spot-on. The four new tracks continue that trend. 'When God-Fearin' Women Get The Blues' is somewhat atypical for McBride in comparison to her recent, more pop-oriented material, but the honky-tonker is a welcome respite from the pop fluff saturating country radio.
'Where Would You Be' is a sterling ballad, featuring a typically first-rate vocal performance. 'Blessed' is the least essential of the new tracks, though it's still a solid uptempo number. Which brings us to 'Concrete Angel', a stark ballad focusing on
child abuse that continues McBride's crusade to convey relevant social messages through song. Though not as subtle as, say Suzanne Vega's 'Luka', it's still a stunning work that may be far too sophisticated and adult for the narrow boundaries of country radio. As good a collection of songs as you'll find anywhere, from an artist who continues to astonish.

Free Music Review: (Almost) ALL of the BEST singles and hits!
Hit: 5 Stars

I am never satisfied with "hits" packages from my favorite artists! There are always songs not included that I feel should have been. This one is no exception, but barely! I feel the collection would have been a more rounded overview of the last decade of McBride's music if she would have included at least one or two songs from her critically acclaimed debut album. The songs might not have been top ten hits, but "The Time Has Come" and "Cheap Whiskey" (my absolute favorite!) were video staples on CMT and TNN before she was a star. Also, it would have showed the overall growth of the artist better! Other than that minor complaint, Martina McBride's "Greatest Hits" is way above average, with the positives outweighing the negative. All of the other four studio albums are represented here very well, including her last one (I hate buying a "hits" album and not one song from the previous record is on it!). The four (!) new songs are destined to be hits! These four songs are great samples of what's to come. But, the best part of the album is the linear notes. McBride and producer Paul Worley discuss every song on here, good and bad parts! I love reading the artist insights into her music. This collection is just a reminder of what a breath of fresh air McBride has been to country music. She is the best female artist out there that continues to explore and grow as an artist. This compliation of hits is proof of that.

Free Music Review: A Decade Of Hits
Hit: 5 Stars

For the past ten years, Martina McBride's breathtaking soprano has been an enjoyable fixture in country music. This eighteen-track Greatest Hits offers her most successful recordings.

As this set shows, hits collections are not always the most satisfying representation of an artist's work. McBride's early hits (1992 through 1995) were all romps like "My Baby Loves Me," "Life #9," and "Wild Angels." Subsequently, the first third of this chronologically arranged disc is predominantly uptempo, with only the poignant ballad (and non-single) "Strangers" interrupting the frenetic pace ("Still Holdin' On" - her sorely missed duet with Clint Black - would have helped the balance).

The disc starts to blossom with McBride's best work from 1997's Evolution (her strongest release to date) and 1999's Emotion. The gospelish "A Broken Wing" and the anguish-filled "Whatever You Say" showcase McBride's impressive vocal range while "Valentine" and "Wrong Again" reveal her mastery of intimate material. "Love's The Only House" finds McBride revisiting social issues (first tackled on "Independence Day") whereas "Happy Girl" and "I Love You" capture her perky pop side.

Greatest Hits concludes with four new tracks. Among them, the power-ballad "Where Would You Be" takes McBride to new depths of vulnerability, countered by the feisty "When God-Fearin' Women Get The Blues." All four make it clear that the Martina McBride musical story is far from over

Free Music Review: COUNTRY'S BEST FEMALE VOCALIST!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Martina McBride's "Greatest Hits" album is outstanding! She puts her 110% effort in it. My favorite tracks are: # 3 "Independence Day," the hit of her career, a very patriotic song, #4 "Strangers," a very poignant ballad well sung, #5 "Safe in the Arms of Love," one of the best sounding single records out there and other songs such "Wild Angels," "A Broken Wing," "Valentine," "My Baby loves me," "Happy Girl" and "Wrong Again" are amazing. In her "Greatest Hits" collection, Martina also includes four more soon to be hits including "When God-Fearin' Women get the Blues," which is hilarious, an uptempo hit featuring nice instrumentals, fiddle, dobro and banjo. Another breathtaking new hit of Martina's is "Where Would You Be," which is a very strong vocal performance and Martina blows you away with it. "Concrete Angel" is a very sad song about child abuse and it makes you want to be there and help the young girl out.

"Blessed" is also an elated song, which reflects Martina's life being "blessed." She includes all sorts of emotions in this album: humor, love, heart breaks, sadness, pity and patriotism. I basically love the entire album, but if I were to make one improvement I would add her hit "It's My Time," in this collection, but I guess since it already has 18 songs, it would be a little over packed. Besides that it is excellent. This album is truly worth every single penny! A must have for any country music fan! Way to go Martina!!!
