Free Music Review: Good but not what I expected
Hit: 4 Stars

I like Martina McBride however this album (with a few exceptions) was not what I expected. I saw the album being sold in Christian bookstores so I thought (especially after hearing the cut "Anyway") that it would be an inspirational/Christian/Gospel album. I was a little dissapointed with the content in that regard.

I don't think this album belongs in Christian bookstores. I wish that she would have done a consistently spiritual/inspirational album with other tracks along the lines of Anyway. But, otherwise it is a good album. And of course...SHE CAN SING!!!!

Free Music Review: Solid McBride Release
Hit: 4 Stars

Martina McBride has become one of the most dependable artists in country music, and "Waking Up Laughing" continues her streak of releasing enjoyable, entertaining records.

She ranges from sentimental love songs to heartbreak songs to survivor songs, and maintains her soulful, powerful voice on everyone of them.

"Anyway," "Tryin'To Find A Reason," "Cry Cry," and "House of a Thousand Dreams" should not disappoint too many, if any, of her fans.

Free Music Review: Title doesn't make sense
Hit: 4 Stars

While this CD includes Martina's signature powerhouse vocals and insightful lyrics...the title leads one to believe this is a more cheerful album than it really is. It's one of those CDs that you have to listen to several times before you fall in love with it. I know others have written that this is a very poppy album, but the isntrumental and vocals clearly define this CD as a great piece of country music!

Free Music Review: LOVE MARTINA, BUT...
Hit: 3 Stars

I do love Martina. I think she is a great talent who has chosen her material very wisely over the years. However, there is just something different about this cd. Her voice is excellent form and many of the songs she has selected do have social messages and this is always a good thing. The problem is that this album is a much more depressing that her previous releases. With the exception of the first single, "Anyway" there really is not a positive, uplifting song in the bunch. I have listened to this album many times and always find myself turning it off before the end of the cd. I guess it could be summed up this way: I do not believe many of the songs to be radio friendly and while it is important to give the folks something to think about when they listen, you should never underestimate the value of a nice melody and catchy chorus.

The best examples of Martina's talent are her "Greatest Hits" cd and the new live concert dvd. It will be well worth your time.

Free Music Review: Up and Down
Hit: 3 Stars

Let me preface this by saying that this was the first Martina McBride album I ever bought. I have since bought a few of her earlier albums. 'Waking Up Laughing' is an album that is very pleasant and endearing to listen to over-all, but in spots the lyrics are downright clutsy. I am not quite sure why some country artists feel the need to reaffirm their faith in God in songs to the general public--can't we figure that out for ourselves? She is sweet and she is good and all that but somehow I can't get around the fact that she has to spell that out so often. Martina works the same sort of material, in the same vein as Patty Loveless, but Patty did it in a way that does not make you feel below her-- she's just one of us. Martina's voice is beautiful, but I think it may have dropped half-an-octave. She sounds like she is pushing it a bit on many songs. I do, however, recommend this album.
