If you but only one cd this year... this is the one to buy. If you see only one concert this year... they are the band to see.
Free Music Review: The songs just grow on you Hit: 4 Stars
The last album from the Legendary (in some circles, at least) Marvelous 3. I must admit that, upon my first few listenings, I was underwhelmed. Some catchy hooks and melodies, but not as good as The Hey Album. So I put the disc aside for awhile, then decided several months later to give it another spin. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised.
I have to disagree with the reviewer who said that it sounds good at first, then gets worse the more times you hear it (I paraphrase). It had the opposite effect on me. The more I listen to it, the more I hear, and the more I like the songs.
Butch Walker is doing his Butch Walker thing times ten, which is never a bad thing. You can't tell if the whole thing's a joke or to be taken seriously. And if it's a joke, just who is the joke on? But the music is there, and so are the lyrics. It possesses a seriousness and yet is still able to laugh at itself (ie: to not take the music too serious) at the same time. This album rocks, rolls, and occasionally offends (as most of BW's records seem to do). Straight-ahead rock, metal, pseudo-metal, grandiose overblown arena-rock pretentiousness (yet still good), and even a slow(er) song or two make this album a hard-rockin' fan's delight.
If you're a Butch Walker fan, do yourself a favor and get this disc. If it doesn't grab you right away ( which it very well might ) give it some time, and you'll be banging your head along with the Marv 3 in no time.
Free Music Review: loud, catchy, and fun Hit: 4 Stars
if you've never heard of marvelous 3 before, then i highly recommend any of their three albums. the vocals are energetic and over-the-top, the lyrics are tongue-in-cheek, but also poignant at times, and hooks are nonstop.i can't say yet whether i like this one better than the hey! album, but it's definitely got a lot of energy and production in it. grant park is hilarious, and cigarrette lighter love song earns its name. oddly enough, the only track i don't like so far is their single, sugarbuzz. i think the only other drawback is that they don't slow it down as much as before for the listener to take a breather, but that's just marvelous 3's approach...to assault you with all their guitar hooks and melodies until you can't help but like them. great CD.
