Free Music Notes for What's Going OnFree Music Review: I love What's Going On - it is a beautiful work of art. Hit: 5 Stars
I just listened to my new CD copy of this 1971 Marvin Gaye album which arrived by airmail from the USA yesterday. Although I have heard the title track before , and I also know Mercy Mercy Me and Inner City Blues, I never heard the other songs before . This album is simply beautiful and heartfelt and has really touched me. I would love other people who haven't yet discovered the timeless quality of Marvin Gaye's wonderful soul music to start by buying What's Going On from Amazon.com ( as I did ) or from their local CD shop.
Every song is special , and unlike many CD's where songs stop abruptly or fade out, all the 9 songs are linked together as a set. There is no padding, no inconsequential songs, and everything works beautifully together. The orchestration is lovely, and Marvin Gaye's wonderful voice is truly an inspiration as he sings about our shared human conditions from the soul of his being.
This music can never go out of date . It is for all time and for all people everywhere, and is one of the best albums ever.
This is a 5-star All-Time Classic album

Marvin Gaye's 1971 classic "What's Going On" is a tremendous R&B album that every self-respecting fan of the genre should have. What makes this album so great is its uncompromising history: Berry Gordy wanted more up-beat songs from Marvin, and received the title track, which lamented the wasteful war in Vietnam. Gordy was horrified and almost refused to release it. Of course, the song became a huge hit in the US thanks to increasing awareness about societal problems, and now Marvin had to record an entire album to supplement the single. The entire album took an intense 10 days to record, but you could never tell by the languid flow it possesses. This album is dense with rhythm and melody, and flows together like a single song suite, making it a must-listen all the way through in one sitting. What's also great about the album is that its messages still hold true today. We still face problems that Marvin saw the US face 30 years ago: a needless war, problems with the environment, and social problems across inner cities in the US. Marvelous music, uplifting message, this is truly a classic album.
Free Music Review: The Best Album of ANY Musical Genre Hit: 5 Stars
What is there to say about this landmark album that has not already been said, if your are reading this review you probally know about the hesitation for Motown to release it, Marvin's internal deamons and the like.
However, to me this album is ageless and speaks to the human condition not matter who you are. Can't relate to Inner City Blues ?, than what about Mercy, Mercy, Me (the ecology).
There is something here to touch anyone (that is anyone worth touching), and as our nation is once again in a war of immense question, why hasn't Whats Going On (the single) been re-released???.
An interesting addition here is God Is Love, Marvin came from Gospel routes, but was haunted by the many forces that seemed to pull at him all at once. In this song he seemed to take comfort in knowing a God was there.
Had Marvin not been taken from us so young, could he have given us another classic like this one??, perhaps, but then again perhaps not.
Free Music Review: simply one the BEST musical compositions of all time Hit: 5 Stars
This is simply put the greatest body of work ever written for the public to enjoy, and yet to learn from too. He was not just writing for one person, he wrote this for all of us.It stands alone in the music world, in high demand still, even after its 1971 release. Motown did not want this album, it was too volitile to release in 1969, so it sat for a year and a half. Yet it revoloutionized music, it was an album, a concept album when America was into singles still. I am so glad they realized someone had to say what was said on this disc. To me this is a work of musical, and spirtual art. He is speaking of himself and of society, all in one beautiful musical journey. If you have never heard this work, listen to this disc, and listen with an open mind. It is simply one the BEST musical compositions of all time. Timeless and powerful, a piece of love from a man who was so troubled in his own life. He gave us a message from God, a gift he could not ultimately find himself, peace and love.
Free Music Review: Shame Hit: 5 Stars
It's truly a shame that people write their closed minded comments that trash such a soul shaking masterpiece as this landmark CD! Ever since I was a child this LP has been in the house (my mother's favorite) and even today it's message is just as timeless as it was back then. If you don't understand what I mean...take a good deep look at the very world around you today and you hopefully will understand. It was a mix of emotions too deep for a lot of people because it pulled no punches! It opened your eyes and stuck your nose in the mess and asked you "What's going on?" plain and simple... If I am correct this original LP came out around early seventies and today in year 2003 is STILL in production and demand! That speaks more than any words can say to me. Don't try to analyze his message or the music, just sit back and let it make you think and feel as it has done for countless others.
