Free Music Review: One of the greatest albums ever released

What else can I add to the 34 reviews before me? Every song on this CD is the favorite of somebody out there, which is pretty remarkable!
These songs are exquisitely crafted, both lyrically and musically, and MCC takes just a half step back from the commercialism and marketability that made COCO ("Come On Come On") a quadruple platinum seller, and as a result, this album rings just a little bit truer. MCC gives us more of a "concert take" on her vocals here; in others words, she has that intimate, intangibly heart-wrenching sound she employs in concert, as opposed to the perfect singing she gave us on COCO. (By the way, she's a hell of a vocalist - she can hold her notes extremely well...listen to the lines on "I Take My Chances" for proof.)
My personal fave? The title track, followed closely by "Why Walk When You Can Fly" and "Jubilee". Deeply personal lyrics that cut to your own heart and make you reflect on your own life choices. Not many artists can do this, but Chapin can.
My only gripe? Personally, I love well-produced, commercially-crafted songs with hooks and great little production flourishes. I also love wonderful harmonies and intricate background vocals. While instrumentally, this CD is flawless, I find myself pining for some luscious background vocal arrangements on some of the songs. "The Last Word" is but one example. It really could have been elevated into a #1 Country hit if it had a choir-like buildup on the last verse and refrain. It just begs for it!
"House Of Cards" is as affecting in its own way as "He Thinks He'll Keep Her". "Tender When I Want To Be" simply rocks (it's this CD's "Passionate Kisses".) "Shut Up And Kiss Me" displays the classic MCC sense of humor that permeated "I Feel Lucky", plus it boasts phat, sexy slide guitar by Lee Roy Parnell! (These 3 songs were the big hits, but I really thought there would be more hits off this CD?)
Other notables: "Why Walk When You Can Fly" is just perfect. It's a bluegrass-tinged uplifting anthem, powerful yet gentle and soothing. "Where Time Stands Still" is a pristine piano ballad that tugs on the heart strings. "A Keeper For Every Flame" is another hit that could have been - it's the most country-sounding song here, as opposed to the majority of the songs here sounding either more folk or more rock. "Keeper" has a great story line.
This CD to me is better than COCO because there are no "omg my record label made me record this piece of cheese" cuts like "Not To Much To Ask" (LOL) on COCO. :)
