Free Music Notes for The CallingFree Music Review: A true artist Hit: 5 Stars
This happens every time MCC releases a cd. I listen to it and think that I do not like it. Then I put it in my car cd and listen to it again to and from work, and my opinion starts to change. By the time I get home from work the second trip, the songs are stuck to me like glue. I cannot get the beauty of Twilight out of my head, and I keep singing "Your Life Story" each day to myself at the candy machine. "Bright Morning Star" is such a hopeful song. " Houston" is my favorite in the bunch and to me there is not one miss. They are all gems with the exception of "Why Couldn't We" a sort of liberal anthem that just falls flat.
Carpenter continues to grow as an artist, a poet, a dreamer and a songsmith who is not content to have top 10 country hits, but uses her profound imagery to weave and tangle us all in a beautiful collection of songs from the heart. Some personal and others more political in nature, this is probably MCC's best cd to emerge. Unfortunately, due to health issues, MCC will not get to tour with this album, but we will have to wait until 2008 to see those songs delivered live.
Free Music Review: This is an excellent new album from Mary Chapin Carpenter Hit: 5 Stars
This is a great new CD from Mary Chapin Carpenter. The Calling is a wonderful first track about how everyone discovers their purpose in life at different stages. My favorite track is the upbeat track We're All Right. This is a fun song about living life footloose and fancy free. It Must Have Happened is another upbeat song about how a person changes over time. I think a lot of people can relate to the lyrics of this song Twilight is a slower paced track about the beauty of twilight and nature. Mary's phrasing on this track is very pretty. Houston is a lovely song about how people sometimes dream about having a better life in a new place. The piano playing is lovely on this track. On With This Song is Mary's patriotic tribute to the men and women who serve their country in the military. I like this track a lot. Here I Am is a standout track about friendship. The guitar playing and Mary's vocals are very moving here. Why Shouldn't We is another gem about keeping a sense of hope and faith in life. I really enjoyed the songs by Mary Chapin Carpenter on this album.
Free Music Review: "OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN..." PURE, Honestly raw, Ms. Chapin. Hit: 5 Stars
The Calling by Mary Chapin Carpenter is lyricly pure, deep, thought provoking and inspiring. Her gift with words continues to amaze me. I have listened to and have all of her albums. This being, perhaps one of my favorites.
She is able to reveal herself, her emotions and passions-- in each song. The added pleasure - her melodic and soothing voice. She feels - every word and note she sings. And invites us to join.
If you want to be inspired, healed, moved and "called" to action-- by this CD. Sit back and enjoy the view.
Buy all of her music. She is neither rock, country, folk or pop. She is MUSIC.
Her interview on NPR-- can give you a glimmer of what I'm talking about.
There are too many times for me to count how often one of her songs just hits me, knocking me over like a ton of bricks; leaving me to say, thank you, once again, for saying and singing thoughts I cannot write- but deeply feel.
Her music is magic and she has left me breathless and in awe once again.
I wish for her a speedy recovery.

Free Music Review: Words and Music to Inspire Hit: 5 Stars
I first really listened to Carpenter's music when I heard "Closer and Closer Apart" used as poignant background music for an episode in the television series "In Plain Sight." I had to have this magnificent song, and, of course, my pursuit led me to "The Calling." What a wonderful album. Carpenter's lyrics are so well crafted and so inspiring, I can not stop playing several of the songs every day. The beauty and clarity of her voice along with the fantastic accompaniment make this album a keeper. When she sings in "Leaving Song" of "the three greatest gifts of moving on are forgiveness, hope and the great beyond," I am encouraged to further step out into the world and take some chances. Her "Bright Morning Star" has become a touchstone in my life, and I have never been more serious when I say this. With her words, "But courage hears the sound of dawn approaching," I realize we can each find our own star and the light of discovery, safety and salvation. This is an incredible message from a great singer and lyricist.
Free Music Review: CALLING FOR PERFECTION AND MCC DELIVERS!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Upon my first listen this morning to this stellar release, I am in awe! Nobody can deliver a story in a song the way that MCC can do it! Every album of hers gets deeper and deeper. The Calling pretty much is Between Here and Gone, Part 2. It continues to tackle the ongoing uncertainty the world is feeling. On Houston, MCC tackles the atrosities over the lack of response from the Bush administration to Hurricane Katrina. On On With The Song, she tackles the pathetic right wingers who turned on the Dixie Chicks all for voicing their opinions! Fact is, look at what Bush has done to the country and the world! If anyone reading this, thinks he is a saint then your head is clearly in the sand. MCC dedicates The Calling to her father and the liner notes are extremely touching. This release is a wonderful mix of uptempo and ballads and for anyone who just wants to sit back, relax and hear a true account of the U.S.A. in today's world, pickup The Calling! You'll be so glad you did!
