Ok, I admit that I'm biased. I've been a Mary fan from Day One and I don't think she'll ever disappoint. I wasn't even that mad at Love & Life. One of the reasons I love MJB is that she continuously reinvents herself. And yet again, another Mary that we've never seen. She's so classy! I love the new look.
But this here, Growing Pains... what a piece of ART. It's beautiful! Not a single misstep on the whole album. 10 stars if I could. I can't stop listening to it...

Mary is a music legend... the woman is consistently putting it down... the beauty of EVERYTHING she puts out is that it's REAL and it has HEART... "Work In Progress" is just beautiful. Mary has such a genuine heart and I can say that without knowing her because it's virtually impossible to - Year after Year after Year after Year - and - Project after Project after Project after Project - reach people in the depth that she does. I can't possibly imagine anyone sincerely disliking this woman OR her music... it's really, in my opinion, as real as it gets... I love this CD. Mary definately put it down!! The lyrics, beats, and vocal execution are superb. Once again Mary gave us a peak into her life. The realness of her lyrics and her strong conviction while singing, make this CD such a pleasure to listen to. I can not get enough. You know how you get a new CD and you listen one time and say "this is okay"; well with this CD I keep thinking, "this joint is bumping". I kepp palying it over and over.
Mary did her thing. I am proud of her, her strength as a mature "Grown Woman" shines throughout. Even if you are not a Mary J. fan, you'll love the CD.

I heard an advance copy of this cd and I was totally immersed and very impressed on the first hearing. This is for me, Mary J's strongest cd to date. Not just because of her powerful vocals, (always a good point) but the songs are very strong with a great deal of depth and style which only get better with repeated hearings. I also detect some Stevie Wonder influences which is a good thing. All of these things lead me to say that Growing Pains is the best cd of 2007 by a fair distance beating Angie Stone's Art Of Love And War into second place. For me the "Mary" album launched it all - and spoke with extreme clarity and honesty chronicling pathways of strength and self-respect - the album expands upon the pathways toward strength by being as honest as possible - few artists take so many personal risks in their art - for her honesty and willingness to confess her doubts, struggles and defeats through her art - I have nothing but extreme respect for this performer. She is out there beating a pathway to positivity, honesty and self-respect - and that ain't always easy to do - in fact, it's seldom easy to do.
