Free Music Review: Mary Just A Little Bit Stronger

Somehow Mary J Blige has managed to keep herself very reliable in terms of quality music and maintain a connection to the all too often less than successful contemporary hip-hop R&B style. One good reason for that is that she manages to somehow make all of the qualities her music embraces,every beat and every loop become believable funk. One thing I used to get kind of confused about was her maintaing the need to have rap inserts by the biggest rappers in the biz when her own voice and production are more than enough to carry a whole album. But I also realize that is the route she took to funk. After all,who knew hip-hop would ever become so closely linked with commercialism anyway? Even so the one quality that makes this album significant is the energy level involved in all twelve songs. Not every one is a dance/funk groove either. Some of them lean more towards the 80's based sound so previlant now. The music is also quite a lot more slickly produced and less brittle than the last album Growing Pains,also a wonderful release by the way. But as always it's satisfying to see any artist worth their name growing and adapting in styles all too often thought of as rigid and inflexible. As with a lot of albums some of the songs are stronger than others of course. The opener tonight is this very strong,intensely reverbed bassy funk jam that,while it has the vocorders and "whoa whoa whoa" vocal calls of typical modern hip-hop/R&B manages to throw down as great modern funk. "The One","Said And Done" and "I Am",to me anyway come off more as filler:so obviously designed to go along with what everyone else has and continues to be doing that they never really rise to any inspiring level beyond just dancing,even if the lyrics are good. Much better than that is "I Feel Good" and "Each Tear",both of which mix a certain ethereal flavor with strong dance beats. The fantastic midtempo "I Love U" and the brilliant slow jam closer "I Can See In Color" both utilize this very bass level variety of funk (bass in the instrumental sense,not sound quality by the way) that is alternately slow grooving,enticing with just a hint of forboding. "Good Love" has some great gospel/funk horn loops and a really enthusiastic flavor that is not only spirit cleansing but uplifting at the ame time. "Hood Love" again is a bit typical in execution but the musical ideas and vocal exchanges between Mary and Trey Songz make it all worthwhile. The punchy "Kitchen" has a heavy piano thud-type hip-hop influence while Mary sing a catchy lyric metaphorically indicating what she'd do with someone interloping between her and her boyfriend. It's assertive but there's also a pleasing element of wit and humor to the affair. The only fairly typical Aretha-inspired ballad Mary throws down here is "In The Morning" and it's a really good one.Overall here we have an album that you can tell has some serious heart and passion involved and the desire to get people swept up into the power of the groove.
