Free Music Review: Mary: Live Hit: 4 Stars
Mary J Blige released this in 1998, finally a TOUR album, from her SHARE MY WORLD TOUR. While its a nice album, I felt slightly disapointed for one reason. I didn't like how the songs were cut short so they could fit the whole set list onto one CD. I would have gladly payed extra money for a double CD or something. But this gives you a general idea of who Mary is and what she sounds like live, if you're like me and you've never had the chance to experience her live in concert. She covers her whole career (to that point), from WHAT'S THE 411? to MY LIFE, from MY LIFE to SHARE MY WORLD, and a bit more. I really like "Daydreaming" and her rendition of "Misty Blue". From WHAT'S THE 411? we have "Real Love", "You Remind Me", "Love No Limit", "Reminisce", and "Sweet Thing" and more. From MY LIFE we have "Mary Jane", "My Life", "You Gotta Believe", "Mary's Joint", "I'm Goin Down" and "I'm The Only Woman". Then we have SHARE MY WORLD including the title track, "Thank You Lord (interlude)", "I Can Love You", "Everything", "Missing You", "Keep Your Head", "Seven Days", and also her hit "Not Gon Cry". Overall its a good album for the fans, almost flawless I just wish the songs weren't edited.
Free Music Review: Mary Got Her Live Chops Hit: 4 Stars
If there was any weak link In Mary J's early work it was her live shows. It can take an artist years to perfect their live stage persona and in her case she went almost from the Kereoke Booth at the Galleria Mall in White Plains to the What's The 411 Album overnight. Being a great live performer is key however to a long run, and a number of artists have let their reign fall by becoming known for lackluster shows.
Happily by the time she got to the Share My World Tour she had gotten her live act together. Although I could have done without the sometimes annoying DJ, this live set is polished and shows Mary progressing from her early days into a true Soul Diva. Her interaction with the adoring crowd is sincere, and during the final encore a stellar take on "Misty Blue" she makes some heartfelt remarks about finding her way.
Key songs in the set list include; "Seven Days", the ReRe classic "Daydreaming", "Not Gon' Cry", and a moving "Missing You". It was right around the time of this tour that Mary's friend, Whitney started a slow steady decline both personally and professionaly. Thankfully Mary J., choose not to got that way.
Can't wait for a new Live CD from her.
Free Music Review: Beautiful Mary J...... Hit: 4 Stars
This is the only album I have of Mary's, and I feel like I am in Los Angeles, in the front row seat everytime I pop this in my boom box. Ms. Blige fills your ears with her honey-sweet vocals, and emotes a feeling of warmth on every track. My personal favorite tunes are: SWEET THANG (her cover of Chaka Khan's hit), EVERYTHING (I think this is an English-language version of a Japanese pop song--very nice, and a very catchy hook), & MISTY BLUE (this is such a soulful song....I really felt her gospel roots emerging.....full of beauty and spirit). I am so glad this concert was captured on CD for the rest of us who couldn't afford the $50 a head concert!
