I am a a huge broadway fan so when I heard the Mary Poppins was making it's way to the Great White Way I knew I had to hear it. When I did I was completly blown away! Not only are all of the old and beloved songs there and complete the are a host of all new ones that still hold up the magic of the show.

Cherry Tree Lane Part 1
The Perfect Nanny
Cherry Tree Lane Part 2
Practically Perfect
Jolly Holiday
Cherry Tree Lane (Reprise)/Being Mrs Banks

Although this show is produced by disney it isn't a disney musical. the story has been expanded to include some of the original story lines from the Mary Poppins books. the show is great and so is this recording. Buy it!

Hit: 5 Stars

This C.D. is more than worth it's pricetag- I was lucky enough to see the show in London's West End when I was in London. The show in short is AMAZING- it's a show that brings ADULTs and kids to their feets and makes you leave the theater believing that ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!

Based on the classic movie- the show has only ehanced those classic songs/feelings captured in the movie- with the addition of many more adventures. The songs added fit perfectly among the Sherman brothers orginal ones and the cast in SUPER.

Laura Michelle Kelly is MARY POPPINS- much more than a look-a-like but captures the whole spirit or what Mary Poppins is. David Haig is perfectly cast as George Banks and unlike the movie has more depth about his sterness. But, my favorite cast member is Gavin Lee who IS Bert- possibly better than Dick Van Dyke- in the show singing and dancing upside down. And has an increadiable voice to match all that talent!

My favorite new songs would have to be "Anything Can Happen" and the newly refurbished "Step In Time." After listening to this C.D. you'll find yourself believing "Anything Can Happen If You Let It." I can't wait- until this magical show casts it's spell on Broadway! Broadway or Mary Poppins fan or Disney fans must have this recording in their collections! Hit the buy now button and let yourself be charmed by Mary Poppins as well.

Free Music Review: A fairly Jolly Holiday
Hit: 3 Stars

I have seen the show and enjoyed it very much but I have to say that , where the films message was a little more subtle this show seems to spoon feed it`s audience every morsel. The original film was about bringing a family together and how it only takes a little effort to make situations better (FEED THE BIRDS).

Most certainly Mary Poppins was in charge from the moment she flew in on the east wind until the end when she flew away leaving a happy family behind. In this version she leaves somewhat defeated in the 1st act. I think the reason for this was to let her fly back in at the opening of the second act. (for effect if nothing else). Something like this never would have happened to the Mary Poppins the public has known and loved for nearly 70years. I`m sure PL Travers would not approve of that.

As far as the songs go the classics are still there and the new ones fit in pretty well even if the music and lyrics ("no flies on me"?) don`t come quite up to par with the originals.

Don`t get me wrong I enjoyed the show (mostly the 1st act) and the cast was great. Just a few quibbles with the characterization of Mary.

All in all it was fine if not just a little dumbed down.

Free Music Review: New life for Mary Poppins
Hit: 5 Stars

Although I haven't seen the musical this new version of the Mary Poppins story is a very welcome change. If anyone has ever read the book, and I have, you will understand that Disney played down the character of Poppins. Poppins in the book is much stricter than the sugary sweet Disney version. Also, Pamela Travers, the author of the book, did not like what Disney did to Mary's character. She said, in a review about the Disney movie, that Disney had stripped any depth that she had written for Mary, and when Camerson MacIntosh approached her about doing the musical, he promised her that he would follow the book, not the movie.
I must say that when I bought this cd, I was really afraid that it was going to be a Disney rip off and thankfully it isn't. While the tunes are still there, there are a few changes to the lyrics which only add more meaning to the story. "Being Mrs. Banks" is a lovely addition to the score, once again adding more depth to the character. In a nutshell I really love the cd.
After listening to the cd several times I can only wish it comes to Pamela Travers' birth place of Australia so I can see it. To those people who cant get the Dame Julie version out of your heads, READ THE BOOK. And after reading the book you will find out why the new version had to be different from the film. And that is because it is Pamela Travers' version, NOT Disney's version.

Free Music Review: It's Pratically Perfect in Everyway
Hit: 4 Stars

What an interesting new version of the classic Disney film!

The music is wonderful and different than what the young and old remember from the Disney film. For example, JOLLY HOLIDAY is still the same, but it has new lyrics in which Mary, Bert, and the kids spend a day at the park...with statues that come alive in hopes to catch a glimpse of the famous Mary Poppins!!

Even the storyline(although it didn't have one in the booklet, I tried to piece the songs together to form a storyline) is very different. MARY POPPINS LEAVES AT THE END OF ACT ONE! (Don't worry, she comes back to take back her position and kicks out the new even meanier one while doing a vocalizing battle! How funny!)The story is now centered not on Mary Poppins, but instead on George, Winifred, Jane, and Micheal and their problem on being a real family. George Banks is busy with his business at the bank, as Winifred is trying to play the part of Mrs. Banks as best as she can, and Jane and Michael are trying to get their parent's attention, by means of running away and scaring the governesses. Mary Poppins is now just trying to get the family together, without business matters and without governesses, and being one big happy family. (The last song Mary sings in the CD about the Banks family is very touching)

The stage version is a new approach to the Disney film and books becasue throughout the musical, we finally get to see how Mr. George Banks got to be the way he is, and how Winifred just wants to help George and his problems, like all husbands and wives should. "Being Mrs. Banks" is a very touching song.

Now about the actors- Gavin and the girl who plays Mary are "pratically perfect" in their roles. Why? They don't mimick Dick Van Dyke or Julie Andrews. Every actor and director potrays a character a different way; if all actors mimicked each other, it would be boring. The new Bert and Mary in this version are so talented, as well as the Banks Family.

Get this CD if you want to hear a newer version that the young and old who grew up with the movie that has a new and interesting twist to it.

P.S. The reason I gave four was because of Step in Time- they should have kept it the same as the movie song. ALthough, it does sound like The Barn Raising Dance off SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS.
