Free Music Review: The Songs I Still Hum
Hit: 5 Stars

I was given "Mary Poppins" when I was four, in 1970. Then, it was in LP 33 rpm form. I still hum most of the songs. You will too. Though it was released several decades before, it is a classic, entertaining and completely delightful CD.

These songs are silly, deliciously without any message. "A Spoonful Sugar" (helps the medicine go dow-own!) is as meaningless as it is catchy. Don't be embarrassed after a few listens, that you, an adult, are caught up in public whistling "Chim Chim Cher-ee."

In later grade school, we sang, "Let's Go Fly a Kite" in music class. The lyrics are as simple and childlike as any Robert Louis Stevenson nursery rhyme.

The music seems a million miles away from the canned pop tunes Disney cranks out now. Don't get me wrong, I love "Aladdin" and "Beauty and the Beast" but there is a point at which today's Disney seems to be written to meet a market need than for the pure love of music. I don't think Richard and Robert Sherman did market research or hosted focus groups when working out these tunes.

Among my prouder moments in grade school was being able to spell 'supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,' and that I could say it without stumbling over each syllable. Occasionally, while at an ATM, I can't help but carefully say, "Fidelity Fiduciary Bank," which, at four years old was meaningless and dreadfully difficult. I never did get that one correct.

I fully recommend the soundtrack to "Mary Poppins."

Free Music Review: A perfect compliment to the 40th anniversary DVD set!
Hit: 5 Stars

With the release of the 40th Anniversary two-disc edition of Mary Poppins onto DVD(see my review)there is nothing that could compliment it better than this two disc special edition of the Mary Poppins soundtrack onto CD.
This soundtrack now mirrors the movie as no other release before has done. The music now plays and appears in the order that it does in the movie. Also new background and bridging music has been added to either expand existing cuts or released on its' own.It is an absolute joy to hear and is the closest thing to actually watching the movie itself.
And if this newly remastered soundtrack wasn't enough Disney has added a bonus disc. The first cut consists of approximately 41 minutes of the original six hour meeting of the author of the Mary Poppins books,Mrs. P. Travers, going through a rough version of the story with Disney staff.
The second is a 17 minute interview with the two main stars Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews, the Sherman brothers(responsible for most of the music) and the musical director Irwin Kostal.
The third and last track is the Sherman brothers reminiscing for about 16 minutes on their work on the picture.
Like the DVD extras these CD extras are very revealing, educational and generally enhance ones' viewing of and experience with the movie.
There is only one Mary Poppins soundtrack you MUST own and it is THIS one.Get yours.

Free Music Review: Silly and without message? Quite the opposite!
Hit: 5 Stars

From Wikipedia:

"Several film scholars have written interpretations of the film, including several attempts by structuralist semiologists suggesting that the film has a subliminal and symbolic subtext, intended to prepare America's youth for the political radicalism of the 1960s. Such analysis generally points to politically progressive or radical themes touched on in the film, including women's suffrage, the plight of the homeless, and animal rights, as well its mockery of British Naval militarism, and the anti-Capitalist implications of the Banks' children fomenting a panic at their father's bank. The scholars' analyses also suggest that the children's list of requirements for a new nanny can be viewed as a sort of seminal political document (similar to the Magna Carta or Declaration of Independence) and Mary Poppins "pops in" as a sort of anarchist mentor, who consorts with chimney sweep Bert and his friends, iconoclastic representatives of a blighted urban proletariat, in an Edwardian London fattened by imperialism in its final days before World War I."

Mary Poppins is amongst the most sublime musicals written, and works for adults as well as for children. The movie is far superior to the stage version.
