Free Music Notes for Mascagni - L'amico Fritz / Freni, Pavarotti, Sardinero, Gavazzeni

Free Music Review: The humble opinion of a non-expert
Hit: 5 Stars

After three or four listens I was hooked on this opera that literally flows from one beautiful sequence to the next.

The voices of Freni and Pavarotti blend perfectly. I have never sought out many recordings of Pavarotti, but on this early recording it is easy to see why he would later take the world by storm. After hearing this performance, it makes you realize how many other tenors sound so...strained. Listen to the Cherry Duet on this set and see why. (In fact, you'll be just as jarred as the characters are when the duet ends and the reverie is interrupted by the arrival of Fritz's bachelor friends.)

I don't know of many other recordings of L'amico Fritz, but one thing's for sure: Sardinero has defined the role of Rabbi David for me. I can see, in my mind's eye, the way the Rabbi moves, the way he's dressed, his smile, the glint in his eye as he gently prods Suzel (Freni) to tell him the biblical story of Rebecca. After just a month with this opera, he has become one of my favorite characters.

And now, a word or two on the story. You'll find no murder, fratricide, executions, betrayals, no injustices, none of the usual stuff of tragedy. In fact, this simple story ends happily. The listener, conditioned by the real world (and the common conventions of opera) keeps expecting Rabbi David or one of Fritz's friends to try and steal his young bride from him. We expect her parents to forid the union of their daughter and Fritz. Or something bad, anything bad. No such things happen in this opera. That, I think is part of the magic.

What is remarkable (and fascinating) is, without the trappings of grand tragedy as partially listed above, we experience all the anguish, terror and anxiety of two lovers who suffer terribly simply from not being able to be together, to come together and be one, even if it's just their perception or lack of faith in love or some social convention. These emotions are indeed enough to fill an opera.

So, in response to those who would describe the plot as too simple, Mascagni takes us on an emotional and psychological journey and does so without the blood, guts and fireworks, and that is one hell of an achievement.

This is a fine, sublime piece of art sung beautifully--and by way, the intermezzo is great to listen to by itself, one of those pieces of music that could convert your friends who don't like "classical music" (their words, not mine).

Thus I click five stars and recommend it to those who want to try something non-canonical and also those who enjoyed Cav so much that they refuse to believe Mascagni was a one opera wonder. Guess what folks, he was not! Here we have the proof.
