Free Music Notes for Blue LinesFree Music Review: Ahead of its time Hit: 5 Stars
Hard to believe Blue Lines is an album from 1991. Taking elements from hip-hop beats, adding dub and ambient effects, plus a few rap rhymes and vocalists created the genre known as "trip-hop". What impresses most is the vision and creativity from Massive Attack to produce an album with such timeless and amazing sounds that it still sounds brand new 15 years later.
An essential recording. Few albums produce the ambience that Blue Lines creates. Blue Lines is the soundtrack of an urban landscape, it turns elements of city life into sounds, a soundscape of the city. From a musical standpoint there is no argument against the genius of this album, looking at it 15 years from its release date only adds more greatness to it.
Free Music Review: A subtle masterpiece Hit: 5 Stars
Blue Lines invented trip-hop and electronica, which in and of itself would be enough to make the album a classic. But just as impressive is how Massive Attack uses their genre-inventing sound to frame and mix a variety of established musical styles, including hip-hop, reggae and soul. They mix these elements seamlessly and the musical alchemy reaps intoxicating rewards. Much of Blue Lines' success is due to the sublime performances from the album's three vocalists: rapper Tricky, reggae artist Horace Andy and R&B crooner Shara Nelson. Everything comes together so smoothly on Blue Lines that the casual listener might not even notice how groundbreaking it is.
Free Music Review: The introduction of Trip - Hop Hit: 5 Stars
1991 was an amazing year for music. There were many great and influential albums. But this group from Bristol, England single- handedly invented a new type (or genre) of music that would get the silly name of Trip -Hop. But what's in a name anyway ? Massive Attack stood the world of music on it's ear with this landmark disc. I don't know anyone who has listened to this disc a few times who didn't love it. I won't try to describe the music, I'll just tell you that it was so unique (in 1991) that it changed music in the 90's as much, if not more, than any other disc has done before. Get this CD and your buying a landmark disc that should be in everyone's collection.
Free Music Review: Get yer groove on . . . Hit: 5 Stars
This is very cool, laid back groove soul/occasional dub raggae with sweet singing, smooth rapping, some killer bass lines and samples. Unfortunately they go in for some typically meat-headed rap brags in a few places ("My AK rig goes boom boom!") but no matter. Personally, I love Massive's MEZZANINE and the early solo albums "Tricky Kid" went on to make much more. MEZZANINE is thicker, darker and more sensuous and I think the songs are even better overall. I just LOVE that "trip-hop" style and it's much deeper on MEZZANINE. It's deeper, baby! Apparently, a lot of people on this forum have a problem with this particular point of view. Screw 'em!
Free Music Review: Underrated Hit: 5 Stars
When people criticize this album I don't think they're putting it in the context of when it came out. In 1991 this was pretty revolutionary, different stuff. MA's more recent albums aren't nearly as forward thinking as this one, they're good but not nearly as genre defining or progressive as Blue Lines. This album was the basis of Trip Hop. I haven't seen anyone mention the song "Lately" which is the best in my opinion. Many of these songs are timeless, liek they still sound as fresh today as they did 11 years ago.If you're into trip hop or other similar genres, you'll probably like this, and its a classic anyway.
