Free Music Notes for Crack the SkyeFree Music Review: Epic Hit: 5 Stars
I must say, Mastodon is fast becoming my favourite band... i've been intrigued by this release even since i heard 'Divinations' and saw the trippy album cover. The album is quite exceptional... immediately sets itself apart from anything out there. Elements of prog rock/metal, psychedelia and sludge (to some extent) are dominant in most of the tracks. As 'out there' as the album is, Crack the skye is also Mastodon's most accessible work to date, compared to their previous releases. Practically every track on it is a winner, starting with Oblivion... the slow brooding intro leading into some 'Josh Homme' styled vocals from Brann Dailor. On another note, Brann Dailor is at the top of his game... he is a force to be reckoned with... hands down the most creative drummer i've heard in a long time. Brilliant work. The 10 min epic track 'The Czar, opens with a psychedelic twist and straps into high gear with its balls to the wall second part (around the 4 min mark). Great stuff. The title track is great as well with pounding, constant double bass from start to finish and a lingering chorus. With Crack the skye, Mastodon have arrived and are sure to take the throne of prog metal kings of this era.
Free Music Review: Excellent! Hit: 5 Stars
Mastodon has always been one of those bands that I've set aside from other bands. Not only has the band been original in comparison to other bands but each release has sounded SIGNIFICANTLY different than anything they've released prior. I will admit that when I first heard Remission and Leviathan I was very skeptical. The sounds were new, obscure, and difficult to get into. Several CDs later we have Crack The Skye which is by far the band's best album to date. In this release the band much more progressive influence than their previous records. In Crack The Skye the band realizes that they can kick back and let the song groove and mesmerize the listener rather than constantly battering them with an overflow of music. This album really lets the listener enjoy Mastodon's genius in full rather than just what they can hang on to and keep up with. If you are an old Mastodon fan then I wouldn't come into this CD expecting something like Remission - this CD is more along the lines of Blood Mountain meets Pink Floyd. That being said this CD is definitely a must have! No doubt one of the strongest releases of the year.
Free Music Review: Excellent! But where can they go from here? Hit: 5 Stars
With Crack the Skye, Mastodon takes the progressive/melodic aspect of their music as far as they can take it (I think). Only one song has unmelodic vocals, and it's from a guest singer. There are two songs that are over 10 minutes long. But the music still has an edge to it that is distinctly Mastodon, and the band's writing and performance skills are just as strong as ever. The long songs don't overstay their welcome, thanks to Mastodon's compositional brilliance.
I'm happy to say that the sound quality of Mastodon's latest is a significant step up from Blood Mountain. There's no clipping or overcompression here, unlike on the previous album.
At this point, Mastodon have secured their place as the best metal band of the '00s, with four classic albums on par with Metallica's first four. Where they will go from here, I have no idea. Seeing the uncanny resemblance of progressiveness with each album to that of Metallica's, it's very possible that the next album could be the sell-out album. Even if this is the case, I won't mind, because these guys deserve to make a lot of money.
Free Music Review: My 1st Mastodon Album-And Hopefully Not My Last Hit: 5 Stars
I'm not familiar with much of their earlier CDs...I've heard a couple of things here and there and liked what I heard, but wasn't sold on them...but I felt myself, for some reason, gravitating towards paying more attention to this band...not sure why, becuase, I rarely listen to metal anymore... mainly 'cuase I got REAL tired of these "screamo" metal bands!!!! I decided to pick this album up becuase of the major buzz surrounding it and gave it a listen...then gave it ANOTHER LISTEN...aside from Metallica's best comeback album to date, "Death Magnetic", Mastodon's "Crack The Skye" is a splendedly 5-star crafted masterwork and will be THE metal/prog/hardrock band to watch and could be major contenders to take Metallica's long-standing crown!!! I don't see nothing wrong in a band stretching it's musical boundries such as Mastodon has on the new CD...long as they stay true to what they are trying to accomplish, and Mastodon has done just that. With "Crack The Skye", Mastodon have taken heavy music to a new level of creativity!! I would buy their next CD if they keep writing great albums like this!
Free Music Review: What Now? Hit: 5 Stars
I discovered Mastodon in an effort to find a heavy band like Tool, that didn't scream all their lyrics or affect some doomy Halloween monster voice to get their point across. I love heavy riffing and chugging, but can't stand the screaming, which is why I won't give my money to Lamb of God.
Enter, Mastodon. I got swept away with their amazing musicianship, and learned to dig the gritty vocals, and Leviathan seemed to be their masterwork, but Crack the Skye looks like the evolution and perfection of all the bands' work before it, and the production, songwriting, and musicianship easily ranks this as a winner in Metal, Rock and Progressive, in one clean kill.
If you're looking to get into Mastodon, this is a great way to start, then get heavier and darker as you move backward. If you don't like this album, there are plenty of other bands laying it down nasty and heavy that you can stick with.
This album is a journey and a real gift to music at this time. So, what now with this band? Can't wait to find out.
