Free Music Review: Shuffle no more
Hit: 5 Stars

This record is so good, I finally took my iPod off shuffle mode for the first time in nearly two years. I think that speaks volumes.

Over the past two months, I've listened to *this* record only, nothing else... can't get it out of my head. In a lot of ways, it feels like Master of Puppets and ...And Justice for All meets Dark Side of the Moon and Meddle. But even that is not a fitting description. It's hard to categorize.

Sure, the concept is a little contrived (OK, it's a lot contrived). But musically it's just one h*ll of a ride. And personally, if I didn't KNOW it was a concept album, I never would have guessed as the songs themselves don't sound like contrived pieces stuck together to advance a story line. The individual songs all stand well on their own.

Give this record a few plays through before you make a judgement, because it tends to grow on you. I haven't heard a record this good in many, many years. If this is the future of rock, and heavy music in general, I'm going to enjoy the future.

Free Music Review: 21st Century Metal Classic
Hit: 5 Stars

Although I enjoyed their first 3 albums I always felt that Mastodon were a work in progress. It seemed to me that they were searching for their true sound and that when they found it they would create an epic. Following on from the themes of fire, water and earth that they gave us on their previous works they have now given us air, and this is a work of musical art that reaches new highs. This album is a truly gutsy performance that crosses time from the roots of metal to the present and already deserves album of the year status. It's very pleasing to hear a band that with an already burgeoning legion of fans could have easily just settled for what has already worked for them but they are clearly on a mission. This is a brave and daring album that hearkens back to the sounds of many progressive bands from the past but stands on it's own and is destined to become a legend in it's own right. Let's hope that the mainstream music press recognises and delights in it's many wonders and that Mastodon get the plaudits that they deserve

Free Music Review: How do you spell that sound Homer Simpson makes?
Hit: 5 Stars

You know the one, head back, tongue hanging out, a bit of ecstatic drool trickling down the chin...that's me right now.
Crack the Skye is in every way as strong and satisfying as Blood Mountain, though it does have its differances.
The most notable are the clean vocals, which may turn off some fans, but I think they fit the material perfectly. That material has all the Sabbathy doom, gut-punch Southern attitude, and angular progressiveness of its predecessor, but adds an ethereal, spaced-out quality that would make Hawkwind proud.
With Crack The Skye Mastadon has cemented its place at the forefront of modern metal and has left many seasoned veterans in the dust. This album is a must for any fan of the genre and highly recommendable to anyone who is even a casual metal fan or anyone who just appreciates well crafted musicianship.
In short--buy it! Buy it now!! Play it until you're floating on the ceiling staring down at your body.

Free Music Review: better than Leviathan
Hit: 5 Stars

Fans of Mastodon will definitely not be disappointed. I believe this album to be Mastodon's best, and possibly a candidate for best metal album of the year. The band has grown, and this is its most mature and fulfulling work.

While there's plenty of heavy here, Mastodon ventures into longer, more melodious songs. Is Mastodon the new prog metal standard? It certainly seems like they're making a case for it here. There's not as much face melting as in Blood Mountain. The vocals are easily the best than on any other Mastodon release; they're clean, and I like that. Others don't, which I appreciate. The "Score" disk features the songs as instrumentals, which is a decent album in its own right.

It's a very pleasant listen. The first two songs are good, don't get me wrong, but the album doesn't really pick up momentum until "Quintessence." That track, "The Czar," and the title track are the best, IMO.

Free Music Review: Incredible, Mastodon's Best and Most Accessible Album
Hit: 5 Stars

This album at first took me by surprise for being less aggressive for a band so famous for their aggressive tunes...and yet, after listening to it more and more, it became apparent to me that the musical layers and textures of this CD completely blow away their other CDs.

Another plus of this CD was that it is apparently much easier for the band to replicate the sound of Crack the Skye live than it is their other CDs. I saw them live in concert just a couple weeks ago and they ripped through the CD end to end to start out the concert, it was nearly flawless compared to some of the difficulties they have with some of the songs from BM and Leviathan.

I had this CD on constant repeat in my car for 2 or 3 weeks straight and I probably listened to it 30 or 40 times already and it just gets better and better.
