Free Music Review: Let's cook this!
Hit: 5 Stars

Let's take some Rush, some Yes and add in a little Zeppelin, then let's add a little Iron maiden, Mettallica and some Sabbath. Then add in a pound of great musical talent and a pound of creativity. Let's stir it all together and give it a nice 70s progressive concept albumn feel. And what do get? You get the brilliant work of art Crack the Skye by the great Mastodon. Having grown up in the 70s I thought this kind of great music was long gone. This albumn is truly a work of art. Call it metal or prog rock whatever. I call it some of the best Rock music I have ever heard and I've been a die hard Rush fan for 30 years. It's great to see bands like Mastodon emerging that have the guts and the awesome talent to make music of this caliber. I hope it's a trend thats here to stay. MASTODON ROCKS!

Free Music Review: my balls....gone!
Hit: 5 Stars

this album blew my balls off. Mastodon has changed more with this album than they have in between any of their others. as a whole the album is more conventional than their previous work, but they haven't dulled in any way. they've simply amped up the singing, toned down the screaming and taken a more sane approach to the music (but Blood Mountain is alive and kicking in The Last Baron). the middle lulls a bit, but the album is redeemed by some truly spectacular songs. The Last Baron is one of the best rock songs of the decade. as one would expect from Mastodon, this album kind of makes me want to wrestle a bear and go hunting for great white sharks in the great barrier reef with nothing more than my bare hands and my wits.

Free Music Review: Metallic Psychedelic Explosion in Outer Space!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Mastodon have really surged forward with this new release. This is at once their most creative and vast music, and also their most accessible. The vocals are mostly clean (but extremely intense, in the best of all possible ways) and the guitars are woven into a thick screaming psychedelic tapestry. This is a concept album about leaving the spiritual ties of earth into outer space and returning to earth (through a "Crack in the Skye") to late 1800's Czarist Russia, during the time of Rasputin. G-rrr-ooovy! Understanding the plot is in no way a requisite to enjoying the mindblowing music and lyrics! This is Mastodon's greatest work, so far. Check it out or severely miss out on the year's greatest album.

Free Music Review: Mastodon's trippy "COMA-induced" album
Hit: 5 Stars

First off,for all that say their getting too mellow,I can uderstand with THIS record(your opinion) However to say anything past Remissions is too 'mellow" just isn't right. They have have SOARED creatively, and for ONCE a band is re-defining yet another genre in metal(especially with this album)B.Hinds was coming out of a coma when writing this record,B. Dailor was mourning his sisters death(Skye was her name) and also these guys have consumed ALOT of acid..that alone can create a VERY different vibe when writing.Put all that together- THEN take a listen..you WILL be pleased,IF you believe that not all "metal" has to sound alike.I HIGHLY recommend this album to ANYONE,even those who weren't originally fans.

Free Music Review: Firmly Entrenched in 2009's Top Ten
Hit: 5 Stars

I've listened to Crack the Skye three times, but still cannot finds words that sufficiently capture and rate this album. Bust out your headphones and sit down for an hour, because Mastodon demands your complete attention. Remission, Leviathan, and Blood Mountain are all unique, astounding albums, but exist as wholly autonomous achievements and don't serve to preview the mind-blowing musical explosion of Crack the Skye.
Do yourself a favor and purchase this album now. If you downloaded it, buy a copy. Mastodon has surpassed any expectations that could've been set for their latest creation.
This album earns an easy five stars; this will definitely end up on my Top Ten list of 2009.
