I think everyone should give this album a shot. Weither you like mastodon's previous work or not, this album is a completely diferent animal. The musicianship alone is worth your hard earned money, but you are also given a story about a russian cult, rassputen, and a little boys soul thats lost its way. Ok, maybe the lyrics are a little out there but the point is, have you heard anything like that now days? Especially in todays music scene with cookie cutter bands that dilute the bands that actually have talent. This album can be summed up by 1 over used phrase; Rock and RollFree Music Review: BLOWN AWAY!

First I will say that I love Mastodon, have since March of the Fire Ants. But as mentioned in previous reviews, they keep getting better and better. This album is bar far my favorite as an entire listening experience this band has created yet. I would recommend a good set of headphones, close your eyes and drift away. Hell, after headphones I put it on the stereo and my girlfriend loved it too! Mastodon is one of the greats and are building are really cool history and it is awesome to be a part of it unfolding. When I heard their REMISSION album, I wasn't impressed. I began to dismiss them and ignored them. After hearing CRACK THE SKYE, this was a total 360 degree turn around. This is perhaps one of the best albums coming out of the USA in some time.
This album is pretty dense and thick wall of progressive genius. Excellent production and some good solos.
I am not much for words but after 30 years of listening experience, all I can say is that this is very impressive and should be checked out by anyone who enjoys intelligent, heavy, and loud music.

Then this album came into my life. Listening to their heaviness brings back that feeling of total freedom that original and powerful music can give. Just for the record, I am a new fan of Mastodon, and this is the first album I bought by them. It is a brilliant piece of work, from beginning to end. I bought it because I was looking for something new, and I'd heard great things about it. The music is just layer after layer of metal brilliance. I just don't know what else to say. It has to be taken as a whole, like a movie or a book. Beautiful.
