Free Music Notes for Leviathan

Free Music Review: Massive
Hit: 5 Stars

Appropriate that a whale is the subject of much of this albums focus because Mastodon's sound is as massive as a whale. Mastodon sounds like nothing else, yet is perfectly accessible. I don't even think you need to like metal to like this album. If you like the song samples, get it. They are a pretty good indicator of what's in store. This album is very easy to like. It is pretty complex and consistent, without a single dud to be found. If you like this, also check out Blood Mountain. These talented men pull it off again on that one. Definitely worth your time.

Free Music Review: Just Incredible
Hit: 5 Stars

Never before have I heard a band do anything like what is on this album. Wielding interweaving time signatures and style changes that are beyond complex, Mastodon have created a metal masterpiece. However, Leviathan doesn't stay within the metal genre: obvious bluegrass, eastern, and jazz influence swims in this sea of chugging, maniacal, and paranoia-inducing riffs. I didn't listen to metal before I picked up this album, but Mastdon quickly became my favorite band. Key songs of the album are "Blood and Thunder," "Iron Tusk," and "Megalodon," but every song is deep, complex, and ultimately satisfying. This album is just incredibile, and noone should regret listening to it.

Free Music Review: Better than Slayer
Hit: 5 Stars

Mastodon sets a new standard for excellence in metal. For those of you that hated nu-metal and rap-metal and wished for a return to the golden age of thrash, BUY THIS ALBUM. I dare say this album tops my previous favorite metal album of all time, Slayer's Reign in Blood.

Free Music Review: A True Masterpiece...
Hit: 5 Stars

'Leviathan' is an incredible excursion into a world of dense riffage, odd-time signatures and time changes, unconventional song structures, rich rhythmic textures, and of course a massive angry sea creature who feels like he's being unfairly targeted.

Although I feel like 'Remission' had more standout tracks on it than Mastodon's sophomore offering, I also believe that 'Leviathan' holds together much better as an album.

If you aren't familiar with Mastodon's style, it can be quite difficult to pin down. They certainly incorporate a lot of different techniques and genres into their mammoth (pun intended) sound - from groovy stoner rock and jazz to thrash and progressive metal. The relaxed boundaries and blurry lines definitely make Mastodon a fun band to tune into.

As far as originality, unpredictability and technicality goes, I put this album up there with 'The Sounds of Perseverance' by Death. I know there'll be people tearing their hair out at that statement - it's just a good thing I don't care. For me, 'Leviathan' truly characterizes all the great things about American metal, and will be in my favorites stack for a long time to come.

Free Music Review: Great music - Cookie Monster Vocals
Hit: 3 Stars

The music is great, however, they failed to give Cookie Monster credit on the liner notes for his vocal contributions to the album.
