Free Music Notes for EpFree Music Review: Fans Rejoice! All Others Pass. Hit: 4 Stars
This little hard to find gem is just that, a gem. With the price tag you have to pay nowadays for it, it's really only for the hardcore fans. And they'll be no disappointment for them here.
"Push" is like all the other versions of the song live, so if you have one of their live DVD's or whatever, this song doesn't really hold you purpose. "Crutch" is on the VH1 concert DVD, but for those who haven't heard that version, it's basically an interesting little jazz ditty, that sounds like it should be from the 50's. It's a song with many old fashioned influences, but it's still a good listen.
"Suffer Me" is a new studio track from the band, and it starts off very well, and while it fades a little in the chorus, it's still a very good song, and pure Matchbox Twenty. However, one has to wonder, why the song was put on this rare EP, and not a studio album. "All I Need" could be the best track off the record, I don't think it's been on a live DVD, so it's pretty fresh. Rob Thomas really shines on the verses with this song, and proves that he truly is one of the greatest musical minds of the past 20 years.
"If You're Gone" is a kind of a fusion track, because it's mostly acoustic guitar, but it's sprinkled with electric. The song is slow, and and at times, boring, as they took the emotional element out of the song. "Disease" is a complete departure from the song's hardish rock roots. Rob Thomas does a great job with this song, and really brings out the heart of the song.
Overall, the audience for this EP is very narrow; collectors mostly. But it you're a fan of Matchbox Twenty, and happen to come across this gem, than you won't be disappointed. While this gem is a little unpolished, it's good parts still shine through.
Free Music Review: More like the companion to "Show" than an EP Hit: 4 Stars
This CD isn't exactly that special - on its own. Unlike their other albums obviously, you won't find anything especially "essential" on this except for "Suffer me", their previously unreleased track dating from 2000. Although I gotta admit: the new rendition of "Crutch" is really cool, and the live version of "Push" only proves just how ageless and immortal this song is.
But this EP gets REALLY interesting if you also happen to own the concert DVD "Show: A Night in the Life of Matchbox Twenty". Because these two combined make for a neat little story: how a humble live gig at the Troubadour in LA kicked off Matchbox Twenty's epic tour in 2003, as "recaptured" in Show.
A historic moment seen in EP's video material is when Rob Thomas and guitarist Kyle Cook perform "If You're Gone" live and acoustic before an audience "for the first time". Because from hereon during their tour the only way you're going to hear "If You're Gone" is live and acoustic.
All in all, if you either like MB20 THAT much or intend to fully enjoy the "Show" DVD, go ahead and buy this EP. If you don't have "Show" or have a short attention span, by all means pass. Even we need to save a little money.
Free Music Review: more matchbox twenty!!! Hit: 4 Stars
I am very excited that this album is coming out! Everything that matchbox twenty has ever done has been golden!!! [Besides 'Damn', that is.] I'm picking it up first thing tomorrow!!!The only thing I'm disappointed about is that there's only one truly new song on this album. While I cannot wait to hear it - new material from mb20 always rocks - I wish they'd included more. They haven't released 'Heavy' or 'You and I and I' officially. There's also that song 'Happy' that guitarist Kyle Cook wrote that we heard about while they were working on Mad Season, and have we seen hide or hair of that? They also have some awesome cover songs like 'Time After Time' and 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' that would have really fit in well on this album. I hope they plan another one of these!!! ~ deej
Free Music Review: full of soul Hit: 4 Stars
Wow! Some of their best songs done in a soulful way. The acoustics hit you to your very core. It's a great album for quiet moments or long drives where you just want to get lost in the music. It's really one of their best.
Free Music Review: 3.5 Stars... Intended for the Avid MB20 Fan Hit: 3 Stars
As a casual fan of MB20, I picked this up really cheap, and while this is not a bad collection, it certainly is not essential either, except prob for the avid MB20 (which I'm not)."EP" (6 tracks, 23 min.) is a collection of live, in-studio live and unreleased tracks. The best include "If You're Gone" and "Disease", both finding Rob Thomas essentially by himself with his accoustic guitar, and reworking well-know tracks quite effectively. I also liked the live version of "All I Need". The new song is "Suffer Me", a leftover of the "Mad Season" sessions; it is a good, up-tempo song, and makes me wonder why it didn't make the final "Mad Season" album tracklist. In all, "EP" is aimed for the MB20 fans, and in that sense delivers.
