Free Music Review: Better than YOSLY. Amazing.
Hit: 5 Stars

Here in Brazil we don't get much Matchbox Twenty, which is a total shame. Like the matchsticks themselves love to say, they're never trying to revolutionize music - they're just about making the best songs they can...and you know what? They're damn good at it.
I first heard them in 97 or 98 in an MTV show which featured the top 10 videos in the US "mothership". Yes, it was "Push", but I wasn't actually hooked till I saw the video for "3am". It was only a matter of time (to find "YOSLY" to buy and listen to it a couple of times - my God, what a wonderful-sounding and beutifully written CD...the only song I don't exactly adore is "Busted", that one could have easily been left out) before Paul Doucette, Adam Gaynor, Brian Yale (a.k.a. Pookie), Kyle Cook and Rob Thomas (oh, Rob Thomas...one of the most talented people in the music biz, plus you can't help but looking at the singer, so it's better that he's hot, right? LOL) became my favourite band - a "title" they still hold on to and are not likely to lose. Not even after "Mad season" - an album which I've recently rediscovered and realized is very very good, despite my inicial, well, weirdness about it.
But hey, this is about "MTYTYA". I've had it for more than a year now (it was released in Brazil only last Easter, I guess about six months after it was released in the US), and I've been listening to it nonstop these past few days because of the DVD, which features 12 out of the 13 songs in it (yes, even the hidden track, "So sad so lonely"...it makes me wonder why they left "The difference" out, definitely one of the best tracks...). I guess I like it better than YOSLY 'cos they really do sound more experienced, more confident, you know, like they really grew as a band. No, they're not gonna revolutionize the way music's made, but they will indeed bring you collections of increasingly awesome music each CD they put out. They've really matured here.

1. Feel - I didn't really love that song when I first heard it, thinking the guys were kinda "forcing" on the harder stuff. Didn't really sound like Matchbox Twenty at first. Now, having listened to it again and again, I definitely sense the band's style here and the "heavier" ('cos it's Matchbox Twenty, I mean, who am I kidding? LOL) sound doesn't bother me at all. It actually fits the lyrics. 4/5

2. Disease - OK, I have a problem with this song. This is definitely the less Matchbox-y song of the record and I never really enjoyed it to the fullest. Sure, I'm used to it by now and it's not like I skip it when I'm listening to the CD, but it's gotta be my least fave out of the record. Oh, just one thing: Rob contrasts this song with "Downfall", saying that here the whole problem is the partner's fault and in "Downfall" it's his fault. Well, I don't think so, buddy, just read your own lyrics: you're the one with the desease, you're the one who can't leave the girl even though she treats you bad, you LOSER! LOL 3.5/5

3. Bright lights - I love this song. When you first hear it, it sounds so familiar, like you've heard it before, doesn't it? You probably have. It doesn't matter, though - Rob's passionate vocals make the suffering of the small-town boy whose girlfriend went out to NY or LA (LA would be the logical choice, but since he lives in NYC and says "Let that city take you in/ Let that city spit you out/ Let that city take you down", I'm not too sure) to pursue a career in the entertainment business so worthwhile. "For God's sakes, turn around!!!!!" I would! ;-) 5/5

4. Unwell - What else can I say but "the story of my life"??? I know, I know, my life, your life, Rob's life, your friend's life, your granny's life...but that's what's so cool about Matchbox Twenty, you can totally relate to what they say. Kyle's banjo-playing is sublime. Totally makes the song what it is. 5/5

5. Cold - A song that starts heaviER (note that I say heaviER, not heavY! LOL), but calms down later on. This, along with "Feel", are credited to Rob, Paul and Kyle and are the harder songs off MTYTYA. Pattern, pattern! Must be all Kyle, 'cos Paul's song is so sweet...but that's a whole other track. Anyway, I like this song but there's nothing special about it actually. 4/5

6. All I need - OK, if Rob ever pulled lyrics out of his ass, they are "And when we're sad/ it's kind of a drag". Like, WTF??? "Kind of a drag"????? I mean, you're gifted, dude, you really are, but that doesn't mean that every single thing that comes out of you will be poetry. Maybe you could try a lil bit harder when you come up with stuff like that from now on, will ya? The rest of the lyrics are good, but that part kills me. Seriously. Music-wise, it's a cute song. Nothing special about it either. I like it better than "Cold", but the "kind of a drag" thing forces me to give it a four. 4/5

7. Hand me down - A true masterpiece. Beautiful. Another one of those songs that are universal and yet feel like they were written specially for you. When Rob says "I am with you now" in the chorus, he really is - he, Paul, Kyle, Pookie and Adam, the matchsticks are all here for us with their music to make us leave our troubled lives and be taken to a whole other plan. That's how I interpret it. Oh well. 5/5

8. Could I be you - The first Matchbox Twenty song ever released that has absolutely nothing to do with Rob, this was written by drummer Paul Doucette alone. It does feel like a Matchbox song, from music to lyrics, but if I didn't know it wasn't Rob-penned, I'd probably have guessed it rather quickly. Not his style, I guess - which is awesome, shows that there's actual life in the rest of the group, that all the guys are incredibly talented and Matchbox Twenty is not Rob's solo work with some dudes backing him up instrumentally or four guys trying to emulate the almighty Thomas. "And I was wondering, could I just be you tonight?". Classic. 4.5/5

9. Downfall - "Be my savior and I'll be your downfall". Isn't that how relationships go? And not just romantic relationships, I mean, isn't how it usually goes, the other person is some kind of fortress, some kind of model of perfection, an angel that's gonna pick you up when you screw up and, well, aren't you usually a mess? Sure, I'm exaggerating, but my point is that there's no "guilty" here (if you don't know what I'm talking about, re-read my "Desease" review). The "savior" in this song probably thinks they're their partner's "downfall" too. You'd think Rob would have that perception...hum... As goes without saying, another song anyone can relate to. Plus the choir is amazing. I wish the matchsticks would've called them to the Atlanta show that is on the DVD. That would have been simply amazing. 5/5

10. Soul - OK, this is kinda "so-so". Like, yeah, an uplifting song and all, but, like "Bright lights", sounds like many many things I've listened to over the decades (and mind you, I'm only 21! LOL). Unlike "Bright lights", though, I don't feel much passion in the interpretation here...a nice song, of course, still unskippable, but rather "bureaucratic", like they just didn't give these particular lyrics much thought when making music to them...it never rises, I don't know. I guess I've come to expect a lot of the matchsticks and that one didn't quite do it for me. 3.7/5 (I still like it better than "Disease"!)

11. You're so real - A very very fun song. Love it, love it, love it, specially the beginning ("Are we through?/ You think that I'm beneath you/ But you like the things that I do/ WRAP 'EM UP AND TAKE 'EM WITH YOU!!!"). Pookie's bass-playing in the very beginning is really cool, nothing that wasn't done before, it's true, but it just sounds awesome, plus Rob seems to be having fun performing it...he doesn't seem tormented or anything like that! "You're so real" just makes you wanna jump. That's it. Awesome. 5/5

12. The difference - That just might me my fave song off the album. As a huge Springsteen fan, I was beyond happy listening to this song for the first time. This is clearly The Boss-inspired from lyrics to music, and Rob does a friggin' great job at it. I wonder why this was the only "MTYTYA" song not featured in the DVD...it would've been amazing. But oh well, life isn't perfect! This is also one of the few Matchbox songs that made me picture a video from the word (better saying, "chord") go: it'd be an awesome tour video. Not a live video, but one picturing the guys on tour and missing home... OK, OK, enough with my silliness. But it IS an absolutely amazing song. 5/5

13. So sad so lonely [hidden track] - Another crazy fun song. Totally takes you to a small dirty bar just playing pool and having fun with your friends while the guys just play. It's just too cool, with Rob singing "well I learn to love myself/ I don't need nobody else" and everything. Dude, there might be kids listening to this, you dirty dog! LOL 5/5

Songs average: 4.51/5
Overall album grade: 5/5

Great great album. A couple songs might be weaker individually, but the overall feel is a very very good one. If you're a matchstick fan, c'mon, you have this. If you enjoy Matchbox Twenty but doesn't own MTYTYA, stop reading this review and go buy it right now!!!!!! If you are not familiar with their work or you think you don't like them, it's more than worth a listen. You might just change your mind.

I hope their next tour brings them to Brazil - who knows, Rob's solo album might be big here (*keeping fingers crossed*), that'd definitely make the band more popular. I'll be the first in line.

More Than You Think You Are Poster

Third album produced by studio collaborator Matt Serletic, features the hit single, 'Disease'. Each CD will include a bonus card, which gives the user access to exclusive documentary footage of the making of the album, premiere access to concert tickets and other bonus material. Atlantic. 2002.
Florida's megaplatinum matchbox twenty prove with their third album to be far more versatile than expected, comfortably outlasting the predictions of naysayers. Reuniting with producer Matt Serletic, the quintet takes credible swings at gospel ("Downfall" features a choir), Traveling Wilburys-type twang ("All I Need"), and big-arena rock with "Disease," cowritten by singer Rob Thomas and Mick Jagger and winkingly recalling Thomas's star turn with Carlos Santana on "Smooth." Pedal-steel great Greg Leisz spruces up several tracks, notably the tearjerker "Hand Me Down," while producer and keyboardist Serletic and percussionist Paul Doucette sprinkle instrumental pixie dust. More Than You Think You Are isn't likely to appease critics, who have consistently accused matchbox twenty of yelling when a whisper would do, but fans of the group are certain to dig these panoramic songs, each drawn in broad, vivid strokes. --Kim Hughes
