Free Music Notes for Blue Sky on Mars
Free Music Review: Different, but excellent nonetheless

"Blue Sky on Mars" is somewhat of a departure from Matthew Sweet's earlier work, but not to worry, it's still incredible. This time around, he goes for music with more of a pop flavor to it, but he does this in a good way and still delivers some outstanding rock songs. The album opens with the (apparently) Beach Boys influenced rocker "Come to California," which is, as Matthew says, an invitation, but also a warning about coming there. The second song is a much more pop-sounding track, "Back to You," a really great sounding song, although for some reason the bells at the beginning and toward the end remind me of "Jingle Bells" just a little. Some of the more rock-oriented songs include "Heaven and Earth," with its cool guitar effects, and "All Over My Head," the latter of which ties with "Come to California" for the best song on this album. "Hollow," the fourth track, is dark and kind of creepy, but in a really cool way. There is also the slow, melodious "Until You Break," which gradually layers on the instrumentation as it goes --- it's a beautiful song. The only fault I found with Blue Sky is that most of the lyrics aren't as good as they are on Matthew's other albums, however, they are still quite good, so I'm not complaining. Blue Sky is definitely more than worth your money, although I wouldn't recommend it as a first album for someone who is new to Matthew Sweet.
