Free Music Review: A Completely Cool Compilation!

O.K., I'll admit it....this CD has me dancing around the house, dancing in the shower, dancing as I do my laundry.....what can I say? "Time Capsule:The Best of Matthew Sweet 1990-2000" makes me want to move! I've always liked Sweet - the liltingly jamming "Girlfriend", "the soaringly romantic "We're the Same" and the bouncing, tuneful "Time Capsule" (one of the best pop singles of the last twenty years)are all classics - but never enough to get into him as an album artist. Instead, I told myself that some day he would have a killer "Best Of." Well, that day has come. A number of things jump out at you after a couple of listens....1)How melodic the album is....2) Sweet's inate ability to mix sounds and textures and styles without it being jarring or seeming like he's genre-hopping just to be cool or hip....and 3) his obvious respect for music, both past and present. Aside from the three above-mentioned gems, "Time Capsule" contains tons of music worthy of your time (and money!). You've got "I've Been Waiting", a Bangles - meet - the Beatles - meet - Michael Penn rave that, though acoustically anchored, tunefully reminds us that rock & roll is all about electric guitars and drums. Then you've got "The Ugly Truth"....a total 60's flashback! The first time I heard this song I was instantly transported back outside my older brother's bedrooms, where strains of the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and all the other great acoustic/country textured rock bands were often drifting out from behind (locked!) doors! The diversity that I mentioned earlier really comes into play for the first time right about now....after "Truth" we have "Devil With The Green Eyes" and "Someone To Pull The Trigger", two songs that would both fit neatly on a R.E.M. album (trust me, if Michael Stipe ever leaves the band, they've found their replacement right here!). These two songs are followed by "Sick Of Myself", a grungy garage rocker. Yet it all works! The same kind of amazing sequencing happens again a few songs later.....the thoughtful, melodic "Until You Break" is sandwiched inbetween the rollicking rockers "Where You Get Love" and "Behind The Smile", which in turn segues into the anthem-like "If Time Permits." Rounding out the CD is "So Far", with it's nice rhythmic groove. So.....pick this album up! It's a great compilation, it's a great stand-alone album and......and it's just plain fun! To quote (sorta!) Nick Lowe, it's Pure Pop for Cool Cats!!
