Free Music Review: Astounding Lyrics and Music Bring Heartwrenching Emotions

I absolutely LOVE my new CD of Phantom: The American Musical Sensation by Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit!! I can't play it enough and the sound is wonderful! Each time I listen to it, I am overcome with tears and a tightness in my chest from the emotions that exude from the lyrics. Many years ago, my parents took my twin brother and I to see this play at the Candlelight Theatre in Summit, IL. The playhouse is sadly no longer there as it was great entertainment for our family for years. This particular version stuck with me for many years, but I had forgotten about it until a few months ago when I saw Yeston and Kopit's version again at the Center for Performing Arts in Munster, IN. The party I was with cried ourselves silly with the wonderful acting and beautiful voices that sang these songs. Andrew Lloyd Weber's version had been my all time favorite up till now and I feel torn. I've seen ALW's play in Chicago 3 times, have the DVD and soundtrack of ALW's version with Gerard Butler and Emmy Rosen and cry to both of those.
But when I saw the regional play by Y&K, I can't believe how moved I was. I don't understand why it couldn't play on Broadway in the big way ALW's has. Both stories are different and so beautiful in lyrics in their own way. I have to say I feel so much more in Yeston and Kopit's, emotionally. Can't explain it. I remember telling people I had seen Burt Lancaster in a TV movie years ago and it was fantastic. It never aired again. When I found it on Amazon.com, I couldn't believe my luck. I'm thrilled with both DVD and CD but am sad that the NBC miniseries didn't have the same music in it as the play. Charles Dance was phenomenal in the TV version as are Richard White and Glory Crampton's voices on the CD. Spectacular! I hope someone can do another Phantom movie or TV version with the songs and lyrics by Yeston and Kopit. Their story of not getting it on Broadway before ALW was very interesting and sad, too. I think there is enough talent out there to have two versions of this great story. I wonder if Sarah Brightman ever sang this version. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to buy this for myself and for my twin as a birthday gift this year. I truly hope many more musical fans check it out. I can't get enough music from either version. I'm a very happy customer.
